𝐀𝐬 𝐦𝐲 break begins I eagerly walk to the back of Scoops Ahoy, stopping to hand my ice cream scooper to Robin, my co-worker. We quickly switch places and I find a seat next to Steve in the back, placing my feet on top of his thighs, and letting out a sigh of relief, finally having a moment of peace.

After the school year ended, Steve and I agreed it was time for us to get jobs. With Steve having just graduated, and his dad not letting him into the family business just yet, he needed to keep busy, and I needed some extra cash. So, here we find ourselves in the middle of summer, slinging ice cream at Star Court Mall, the newest and busiest place in our little town of Hawkins.

"Jesus, when does this end?" I groan, placing my elbow on the table and resting my face in the palm of my hand.

"Only a few more hours." Steve sighs as he checks his watch before glancing up at me, "Hey, do you wanna come over tonight?"

"God, yes." I perk up immediately, "Can we get in the pool? It's one hell of a heatwave out there."

"Yeah, my parents are gone again so—"

"Hey dingus, your children are here!" We hear Robin call from the front, and I notice Steve roll his eyes.

I lift my feet up off of his legs, allowing Steve to stand up while letting out an exasperated groan. I follow behind him as he opens the window to the front of the shop and places his hands on the counter.

"Again. Seriously?" Steve questions and we're met with the sight of Mike, Will, Lucas, and Max, waiting impatiently.

Mike shoots us both a look, ringing the bell again, and Steve and I exchange a glance before quickly motioning to the kids to slip into the back before they can be spotted.

This has been going on all summer long, if there's a new movie that just came out, the kids come to Steve and I so we can help them sneak into the movies without paying. They're so hard to say no to, so we give in, every time.

Steve and I lead to kids to the back, opening to door, and Steve peeks his head out, looking both ways, making sure nobody is around before giving the kids the all-clear to enter.

"Come on, come on." I urge the kids to go faster so that Steve and I can keep our jobs for at least a little longer.

"I swear, if anyone hears about this—" Steve starts as the kids make they way through the back hallway.

"We're dead." The kids reply in unison, and I let out a quiet giggle.

With a look of exhaustion, Steve turns to me before letting out a deep sigh. As we both come to the realization that our break is over, quickly head back to the front of the shop. I grab the scooper from Robin and Steve I start to scoop ice cream, while Robin quietly moves to the register, and we work on serving the hungry customers in front of us.

After what feel like forever, the lights in Scoops Ahoy unexpectedly go dark, and I look out the shop windows with curiosity, only to notice the whole mall is completely shut off. My eyebrows come together in confusion before Steve, Robin and I share a glance, unsure of what's going on.

"That's weird." Steve mumbles, as he makes his way over to the light switch in the wall, flipping it on and off repeatedly.

"Steve," I say as I roll my eyes and cross my arms over my chest, "That clearly isn't helping."

"Yeah," Robin agrees instantly, coming forward to stand next to me, "That isn't gonna work, dingus."

"Oh, really?" Steve raises an eyebrow, his lips pursed together before continuing to flick the light switch on and off with his middle and pointer fingers.
