Newt's POV

I walked beside Alby talking about both of the new greenies. "What are we gonna do with them?" I asked. He sighed.

"Well, to keep things the way they are, we just gotta treat them like the rest of the gladers." He said. Suddenly, I heard Gally. He was yelling, "Calm! Calm!" I looked towards the Maze entrance. The new boy greenie, Chuck and Gally were there. The greenie was yelling around and pushing Gally. Me and Alby ran towards them, along with the other boys. "Hey calm down, alright?" I told him.

"No, why aren't you telling me what's out there?"

"Were just trying to protect you." Alby said.

"Yeah for your own good." I add.

"You guys can't just keep me here?!" He yells.

"We can't tell you." Alby says.

"Why not?"

Suddenly, there was a groaning noise from inside the Maze. I could hear the gears shifting. We all turned and stood in the entrance. There was a wind. I covered my face. Then the doors started closing. The greenie looked scared and amused. We watched as the doors closed and listened to the last gears shifting. And it was quiet. Gally turned around and said, "Next time, i'm gonna let you leave." And he walked away.

Nighttime:

I went to go sit next to the new boy greenie. He was sitting alone, facing away from the fire, staring at the Maze walls. I sat beside him. "Hell of a day, yeah greenie?" I asked. He just nods.

"Trust me, the Maze is a dangerous place." I take a sip of Gally's drink.

"We're stuck in here, aren't we?" He asked. I sigh. And nod.

"For the moment." He looks at me. "But," I turn around and point towards the runners. "See those guys? There, by the fire?" He turns around as well. And looks. "Those are the runners. And that guy in the middle there, that's Minho." He looks closely at them. "He's the keeper of the runners. Now every morning, when those doors open, they run the Maze. Mapping it. Memorising it, trying to find a way out." He looks at me, serious.

"How long have they been looking?"He asked.

"Three years."

"And they haven't found anything?" I turn back around.

"It's a lot easier said, then done." The Maze was making the groaning noises again. "Listen," I tell him. "Yeah? It's the Maze. Changing. Changes every night."

"How's that even possible?" He asked, roughly.

"You can ask the people who put us in here if you ever meet the bastards." I say and turn away from him. "Listen, the truth is, the runner's are the only ones who really know whats out there. They're the strongest and the fastest of us all, and it's a good thing to, cause if they don't make it back before those doors close, then they're stuck out there for the night." I said and turned to look at him. He was staring at me intensely. Though he didn't look scared. "And no one's ever survived a night in the maze." I turn away and take another sip of the drink.

"What happens to them?" He asked.

"Well, we call them grievers. Of course no ones ever seen one and lived to tell about it. But they're out there."

Blair's POV

I watched the fire. Swaying in the wind. When someone suddenly sat next to me. I looked at them. It was Gally. He smiled and handed me a glass jar he had. It was filled half way and had brown liquid in it. "I made it myself." He said. I hesitantly raised it to my lips and drank. At first it had a sweet taste, then the after taste was sour, bitter, and tangy. I spit it out, coughing. I handed the glass back to Gally. "Thanks but no thanks." I said. He just shrugged and takes a sip. "So, how do you like it so far?" He asked. I shrug. "I guess, its not as bad as I'd thought it would be." I look through the crowd of boys and search for Newt. "Really?"

Suddenly, drums started playing and they made an incredible noise. I swayed my head to the music. Gally noticed and asked, "Do you want to dance?" I froze. It's not that I didn't want to dance but I didn't know how. I turned shyly to him. "I don't know how." He smiled and stood up. He held his hand out. "Then I'll teach you." After thinking about it, I took it. He pulled me to the middle of the group.

I laughed. Dancing was easy. And fun. Then I saw Newt's face amid the boys. I stopped. But Gally, grabbed me and spun me again. After I finished dancing, Newt was gone.

Gally was fighting and had his shirt off. Every time he'd catch my eye, he would wink. Then he was fighting the boy that came up with me, in the box. I didn't know the boy, like how I remembered Newt's voice. When suddenly he yelled "Thomas! My name! It's Thomas!" Everyone started whooping and congratulating him. We locked eyes. He was handsome. He had brown hair and hazel eyes. I looked away quickly though. I was the only girl in this whole community, so I had to be careful.
