“Rest here. I’ll bring something..” she said, already turning toward the kitchen, her tone leaving no room for argument.
I stayed where I was, my eyes fixed on her back long after she disappeared from view, like if I looked away too soon she might dissolve into thin air. I just sat there, breathing in the fact that she was here. Really here. Not a memory. Not a wish I had whispered to the ceiling an hour ago.
And then reality crept in. There was nothing in that kitchen. No groceries. No vegetables. No packets shoved into corners. Most days, I survived on chai and whatever biscuits were lying around. Sometimes not even that. Cooking had felt like too much effort for a body that barely wanted to exist. The thought struck me slowly, then all at once.
What exactly was she going to cook?
