After some time, Vaani emerged from the fitting room, her expression carefully neutral, as if she had folded all her feelings and locked them away inside. She handed the clothes to the staff without looking at Shivank and said calmly, “Please pack these. Here’s the money.”

The salesgirl nodded and walked away.

Shivank watched her, something heavy settling in his chest. The way she avoided his eyes hurt more than her anger. Unable to bear the distance, he stepped closer and wrapped his arms around her tightly, almost desperately, as if letting go would mean losing her altogether.

“I’m sorry, Vaani..” he said softly, his voice thick with regret. “I shouldn’t have spoken to you like that.” He swallowed. “I just thought… Maybe we should start with something casual, I seriously didn’t mean to hurt you. I am sorry, I won’t—”

Vaani let out a slow breath. For a moment she stayed stiff in his arms, fighting herself. Then, inevitably, she melted. No matter how upset she was, his warmth still felt like home, like a place her body remembered even when her heart was confused.
