My sobs echoed through the empty apartment as I let myself fall apart completely, the sound raw and unfiltered, bouncing off the walls like they were mocking me.
My chest ached with every breath, each inhale sharp and shallow, like my lungs were punishing me for daring to hope. I pressed my fist against my mouth, trying to muffle the sound, wishing, just for one moment, that it had all been real.
And then I heard it. Soft giggles from the locked kitchen.
I froze mid-sob, my body locking up instantly, breath catching painfully in my throat like it had hit a wall.

My mind scrambled for explanations, for logic, for anything that would make sense. Had I finally lost it? Has loneliness cracked something inside me for good? Had one night of warmth been enough to tip me over the edge, to turn me into some tragic, hopelessly smitten, majnu who now hallucinated her laughter in empty rooms?
