June's POV
"I'm really sorry you had to find out like this," Esme said.
"I didn't realize he was even capable of doing those things," I replied, staring in disbelief at the ground.
Grayson had killed people, and he had done it on dad's orders. I looked up at all the others surrounding me, a sinking realization hitting me that I was going to have to go back home and pretend like I didn't know anything.
But what could I do? Run away with them? I knew my dad wasn't exactly a great option, but what if they also killed people? It's not like they didn't knock a bunch of people out at the warehouse. What if those photos my dad had showed me were real, and they just held back that one time?
But they had helped me up until this point. Fuck, I didn't know what to think. I had been wrong about Grayson, what if I was wrong about them, too?
I rubbed my forehead, a million ideas running through my mind.
"Fuck," I muttered. I took a breath before glancing at all of them, thinking. "How do I know that you guys are any better?" I paused. "Sorry, it's just, how do I know you guys aren't also running some sort of underground organization, or going out of your way to hurt people?"
Leo looked at everyone, a silent conversation happening before my eyes. He nodded at them before turning back to me.
"There's no need to apologize for being thorough. We understand." He took a piece of paper out of one of his leather pouches before motioning towards Donnie, who handed him a pencil.
"This is my phone number. If you ever want to meet up and see for yourself what we do, contact me." He quickly wrote down his number and held it out for me to take.
I reached out before hesitating. "How do I know this isn't some type of elaborate trap?"
"You'll just have to trust us."
. . .
I opened the door, peeking around the corner before quietly stepping inside and carefully closing it. The flick of a light switch practically made me jump out of my skin.
"You were certainly out late."
I turned around and looked at my dad. His features looked especially exaggerated under the harsh light, the shadows in the room especially dark.
"Yeah, I was out catching up with some old friends. I figured getting out would do me some good." I forced my body to relax, trying to ignore my racing heart. It felt like all of my nerves were on fire.
He had killed people.
My mind flashed to his body on the floor. I saw a bottle of wine on the counter, and for a moment I thought about what it would feel like to slam it across his head.
How would it feel to grip the neck and slam it against his skull as hard as possible? Had he done that to someone before? Had Johnny?
I stared at him, but it felt like I was looking through him. I couldn't risk letting my eyes wander. He would figure out what I was thinking.
No he wouldn't. Besides, if he did and I went through with it I could get a good hit on him anyways. I glanced at the bottle.
Do it do it do it do it do it do it do it do it do it do it
He sighed. "Just let me know next time you plan to stay out so late. I was worried."
His footsteps echoed as he made his way to his room, and I didn't move until I heard his door click shut.
