*Three days later*
Leo's POV
"TWISTER! TWISTER!" Mikey chanted as Raph and Esme pulled open the large plastic sheet covered in colorful dots.
"Are you guys sure we'll all be able to fit on this?" Esme asked.
"Four people can play on the actual mat at a time," Donnie replied.
"Yeah, Donnie made it a little bit bigger with more dots so it's easier to play on."
"Oh, ok, sweet," Esme smiled. A shuffling sound caught my attention and I looked over, trying to find the source.
"Hey June, wanna play with us?" I asked once I noticed her trying to sneak by.
"Oh, um, no, I'm good. Thanks though," she barely met my eyes, hers focused on anything but me. I watched as she quickly went to the door, slipping out into the tunnels.
"Alright guys, rock paper scissors to see who controls the spinner," Raph said, motioning for us to join his huddle.
"Leo, you playing?" Mikey asked, snapping me from my staring contest with the door.
"No, you guys go ahead, I'm gonna see what June's up to," I replied, my feet already taking me to the exit. Whatever they responded with I didn't hear. Their voices were like white noise to me as I went searching for the only person on my mind.
Once I stepped out of the lair I glanced around and then began to jog in the direction we normally went to go up to the surface. However I didn't need to run long, because as soon as I rounded the corner I saw her. Leaning against the wall, her head was in her hands, and as soon as I saw her I felt a tugging on my heart.
"June?" Her head shot up, eyes meeting mine.
"Leo, hey, what are you doing out here?" she pushed off the wall, shoving her hands into her sweater pockets.
"I just came out to check on you."
"Why?" Her tone didn't come off as rude, she was just asking a genuine question. I paused, taking a moment to decide how I wanted to answer. I didn't want to scare her away, but pretending like nothing was wrong definitely wasn't going to help anybody.
"You've been really distant the past couple of days. Ever since...well you know. I just wanted to be sure you were ok."
"I'm fine," she forced an obviously fake smile, her eyes shining slightly in the low light. Probably realizing that she wasn't going to be able to hold back her tears she turned away, her back now facing me.
"June," I murmured hesitantly as I walked closer to her.
"I'm fine Leo," the shakiness in her voice propelled me to move forward, placing my hand on her shoulder. She looked back, clearly surprised by the sudden touch. Tears streamed down her face, her bottom lip slightly quivering as she stared up at me.
"Remember what I said? You don't ever have to hide from me, June." The wall she had been so desperately trying to build between us suddenly crumbled and before I knew it she had collapsed into my arms, burying her face into my chest as sobs racked her body.
"I've been so...scared," she managed to choke out. I wrapped my arms tightly around her, holding her impossibly close to me.
"I'm sorry June. I should've protected you better," the guilt I felt had been eating me alive ever since she was taken. She wasn't just another person on my list to protect, she was June. My June.
