"BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. I shut off my alarm clock. "Great, another day," I thought, begrudgingly,"

STOP IT WITH THE DANG ALARM CLOCK!!!

Okay, I might have been a bit harsh, but that doesn't change my feelings on this. Find a way to start your story differently, please.

Starting your story with a mundane day, and your main character refusing to get up is so overused. No one wants to stick with a story where there is no escalation whatsoever. Your first chapter sets the theme, the feeling, the base of the story! Don't waste it on an everyday experience, because every story could be an everyday experience. What makes your story stand out? Not an alarm clock, that's for sure.

Besides, whenever a story starts with an alarm clock or a troubled relative, I chalk it up to an author being lazy. It's just a simple way to have the characters' names up early. When your main character's mom calls out their name to wake them up, that's almost as easy as having a narrator say it.

Speaking of narrators, that is an easy way to reveal the character's names. It's as simple as "This is (insert character name here), they are (insert something less boring than beep beep beep here)" see? Simple. Heck, you could even give your narrator a funny or quirky personality like in some shows.

Start your story with something exciting, or at least interesting, ok?
