"Whoa, whoa, hang on, stop." We heard Thomas.
We all turn around to see him in the back. "Do you hear that?"
We all went quiet trying to hear what he heard. There was something, I don't know exactly what it is but it's something. Maybe a ship.
The sound got louder and it was very clearly an aircraft.
"Get down! Everybody, hide! Hide! Hide!" Thomas yelled.
"Fuck, where?" I ask, everything around was rubble.
"Get in here. In here, in here!" Thomas found.
We rushed under what was wreckage from a building that now lay on the ground with a space for us to hide underneath.
Newt pulled me close to him as the sound grew louder. I looked up and could see two helicopters and one ship that was a lot larger.
"Oh, shit." Newt gasped as they flew over us, scanning over the abandon city.
"They're never gonna stop looking for us, are they?" Minho asked.
Once we were sure they would not come back. We left our hiding spot and continued through the city.
———
"Everyone good?" Thomas checked as we climbed up part of a toppled building.
———
We climbed up a large sand dune.
"A little further, guys." Thomas told us.
We reach the top, from there we had a great view. In front of us, there was a little bit more city that would have to walk through before. It just seems to be desert, but in the distance we could see mountains. They were far but they were there.
"Those mountains, that's got to be it." Thomas pointed. "That's where we're going."
"That's a long way off." Newt said.
"Then we better get moving." Thomas said.
Just as we are making our first steps, Winston collapsed. "Winston! Hey, Winston!"
We all rushed over.
He was gasping for air.
"Winston! Winston!" Thomas kept calling.
"He's hurt pretty bad." I say.
"What do we do?" Teresa asked as Winston continues to gasp.
"Winston. Can you hear me?" Newt tried.
"Is he okay?" Minho asked.
"We need to get him out of the sun, then I can see if I can do anything." I say looking at Winston. "He needs his rest. We're gonna have to carry him."
———
We made some thing so that Winston could lay down as we carried him. The boys took turns.
When do the things the most interested me that we found was a bridge, it was a large bridge, but underneath there was no sign of water only sand. I imagine this city would've been wonderful before the Flare happened. Full of life, people, water but now it was quiet, hot, sandy and destroyed.
The day stretched on, but we did not rest, renew our time was limited, Winston needed real help, and we needed to get to the right arm as quickly as possible before WICKED could find us.
The wind got stronger blowing the sand everywhere whipping it hard at our faces.
Newt had the red scarf that I found him covering his nose and mouth. I used mine the same way Teresa did covering over my head and holding it in front of the sides of my face. It was difficult to see constantly blinking from the sand. Maybe the wind would've been nice it helped with the heat.
"Gotta find shelter!" Thomas had to yell so we could hear.
We eventually found a good spot to stop. The sand was high and they were a couple old, rusty cars sticking out. But there was also some ruins that provided a good shade for us.
I sat down beside Newt as Minho passed him a water bottle. Newt passed it over to me before he took a sip himself, my mouth felt so dry the sun head taken away all it's moisture. I had a small sip before passing it over to Newt.
I stood up and walked over to where Winston was laying, his breathing was rapid.
Teresa stood up, she was sitting and watching Winston. She left walking over to where Thomas stood.
Winston looked worse than the morning.
I pulled up his shirt to look at the wound. I didn't know what to do with what I saw. He had multiple deep scratches. Black veins seems to grow they hadn't reached far but they reminded me of what a sting from a Griever looked like.
I gave Winston some water hoping it would help.
I wet a cloth, making sure to not waste too much water. I cleaned Winston's wound as well as I could with what I have, which wasn't very much. He winced in pain at the sights contact the cloth had with his wound.
Winston was a regular at the Med-hut in the glade, he was the most experienced Slicer but he also was the one that got the most injuries, not always the worst, but the most.
I had a bandaged him up on multiple occasions. He'd always be leaving that day though, nothing horribly serious just didn't want to get infected.
I'd know what to do every time he came in before, but now I'm lost.
"Just get some rest." I give him a smile pulling his shirt back down, not wrapping up his wounds so they could air out.
I walked back over to the others.
"How's it looking?" Newt called over to Thomas and Teresa.
"It's a little further." Thomas answered.
"That's not very convincing." Newt turned to us.
Bang! My head shot over to Winston, the origin of the gun shot.
"Hey!" Frypan yelled.
"Guys, get down here!" Aris called.
"Winston what are you doing, man?" Frypan asked. "Give me that!"
"What's going on?" Newt asked.
"What happened?" Teresa asked and she ran over.
"I don't know. He just woke up and grabbed the gun." Frypan said as we all stayed around Winston.
Winston was on his hands and knees.
"Winston, are you okay?" Thomas asked.
"Winston?" I got down beside the boy.
Winston started coughing up, thick dark blood. Once he finished, he rolled onto his back for air some of the blood dripping down his chin.
"It's growing..." Winston pulled up his shirt.
I put my hand to my mouth as I stared at his stomach, the skin around the scratches which dark, the veins sick travelling further in the dried blood black. "Inside me." Winston took long breaths, trying to get it back to normal. "I'm not gonna make it. Please. Please." He reached out his hand to Frypan who was holding the gun. "Don't let me turn into one of those things."
Some veins around his face were black, heavy bags were under his eyes.
Newt walked forward carefully taking the gun from Frypan.
"Wait, Newt..." Thomas spoke.
Newt slowly walked to Winston kneeling down. Newt picked up Winston's hand, putting the gun in it and resting it on his chest without saying a word.
"Thank you." Winston said weekly. "Now, get outta here.
"Goodbye, Winston." Newt slowly got up walking away and waiting on the sand dune.
Minho and Frypan said goodbye next.
"I told you... to be more careful." I say with the best smile I could have blinking back tears.
"I should've listened." Winston answered weekly.
"Goodbye." I give him a simple pack on the floor head before getting up and joining Newt and the others.
Thomas was the last to leave.
When we had the gun shot, it echoed through the quiet air. We all stoped for a while, not moving, just listening.
