The laughter that rang through the air louder than the fighting behind us was enough to make my spine shiver.
"Oh I had missed having a slave telling me what they will and will not do. How many centuries has it been?" Master's piercing gaze told me all I needed to know and for a moment I wanted to run like Ben and Adam had. Get as far away from this place as I could because otherwise it meant my doom.
"No matter. My dear daughter, I believe I have allowed your leash to be too long. Shall we remedy that?" His orbs glowed a brilliant red before an intense pressure built up behind my eyes, the agony unlike anything I had experienced before. The order to submit to his will was overwhelming and I struggled on my feet to even remain standing.
"Janine, what's wrong?" James's concerned voice gave me little hope that I could fight it but blood in my system or not, Master's power was too strong. It felt like I was having my mind being ripped apart piece by piece, the vampire looking through my memories like a movie.
He saw everything. My new plan to become a wolf and be by my alpha mate's side. My plan with the Alpha King to destroy his army of hybrids. My planned death at the hands of James." Vampire brothers separated and pushed me through their line, my body tumbling to the ground in an spazzing crumple of a mess.
"What are you doing to her?" James's words split my skull and I cried out in pain. Every sound was causing me to give in more and more to Master's will, the battle just a few meters away not helping one bit.
"Just teaching her a lesson. My fledgling has been a naughty girl indeed. Wanting to mate with a wolf. Escaping my clutches by having you change her. I think two hundred years in a chained coffin will put her into the mindset she needs to serve her master correctly." My fingers dug at the dirt beneath me, my concern switching briefly to James as it was only with the Alpha King that I had divulged my ultimate plan.
In my second of worry, Master's full power swept over me and I felt the reigns of my body come loose, my body no longer mine to control. I stopped twitching, stood and faced my mate and his wolves. Something about my posture told them that I was not myself.
"You see dear Alpha, this child has had a plan to kill you from the beginning. Her heart was too kind however and she could not find in it her to finish the job. Isn't it poetic that she wanted to die by your hands but now you will die by hers?" The order slithered through my mind.
Kill him.
I was helpless to resist my body rushing forward, James and his wolves on the defensive. His pack members wanted to attack but he growled back at them to fight to get Kestrel while he dealt with me. They followed his orders just as my arm swung at him, aiming for his chiseled face.
James's arm came up and blocked my attack, his other pushing forward to distance himself from me.
"Janine. Wake up. You don't want to do this." My leg rose and round house kicked at his head, the alpha ducking to avoid the hit.
"Oh, but she does. She's wanted this since the beginning. Turning your friends against you. Gaining intel on your allies. Everything. This was her plan." Master's words slid off my tongue and I could feel the wetness of tears rolling down my cheeks. What little control I did have was enough to cry.
No. No more. I don't want him dead anymore.
Whether or not my words affected the alpha or not, he kept dodging my attacks, never once hitting me first. He was trying not to hurt me.
"Janine. If you gain control again, I will do what you asked me. But you have to gain control." I tried to fight Master's control over and over but nothing happened. There was a psychic barrier forbidding me from taking back my own body.
