CASSIOPEIA SAT AT THE DINNER TABLE, slumped into her seat as she picked at the table with her knife absentmindedly. She was much too buried in her thoughts — she had been doing a lot of thinking recently.
Not about promises she made to her family and the ones she broke. She hadn't cared much about them these days.
The thing that had clouded her mind was the current state of the Malfoys.
She thought she knew what she wanted — she thought she wanted to be the 'perfect pureblood'. She thought that going to her grandfather's home during the last summer was a chance to fix her flaws, but now she began to believe they were never really flaws in the first place.
It never really mattered in the end. Her father had barely noticed her very obvious grieving for Cedric — it was like it never happened in the first place. All her previous attempts to make up for her past 'mistakes' hadn't mattered. He had no time for her. He had no time for either of the twins, seeing as he was scarcely around them.
Lucius was usually absent from the manor, and Cassiopeia knew this was not because he was going to the Ministry. Now that the Dark Lord was back, he was now busy doing tasks for him, though Cassie was unsure what.
If he was in the manor, it was possibly due to the many meetings being held which the twins were strictly forbidden from attending. Cassie wasn't complaining.
There were many times when the Dark Lord was present during these meetings. It was easy to tell from the sudden change of demeanour from everyone in the manor, and by the fact that her mother hadn't even allowed the twins to leave their rooms during this time.
Times were changing. And Cassiopeia came to realise that her thoughts weren't mistakes or flaws — they were dangerous.
That was why she had decided she would make it her goal to learn occlumency that summer. It would certainly be effective if death eaters were going to be roaming around the manor, especially when she was friends with the very person they wanted to kill.
Unfortunately for her, learning occlumency with only books to guide her isn't the easy feat she expected it to be.
She supposed the only reason she was even able to be able to attempt it was due to her natural sense of secrecy. Still, at least she was getting somewhere.
"Cassiopeia, stop that," her mother scolded as she noticed the girl scraping the table with the knife.
Cassie finally looked up to see the three staring at her. She sighed, dropping her knife down and straightening herself up.
"I hope this is not how you are acting in school, Cassiopeia," her father drawled. "But I wouldn't be surprised — perhaps that could explain why Draco was made a prefect and you weren't."
