"BETTER, BUT NOT PERFECT," Bellatrix declared, pulling her wand back. "Try again."
Since receiving her dark mark, Cassiopeia and Draco had been practising all sorts of dark arts and skills from Bellatrix. It was tiring, but Cassie knew it was necessary if they wanted any shot at succeeding.
Most of the time, she worked to improve the twins' occlumency. Cassiopeia was incredibly glad she had already started teaching herself the skill; Bellatrix was using legilimency on them to teach them, which meant she had access to Cassie's mind and, considering there was a lot she had to hide, she had to work extra hard to block out her mind from her aunt.
Bellatrix pointed her wand at her again — "Legilimens!"
Cassiopeia felt images begin to flash in her mind — the day she was sorted. Before the scene even began to play out, Cassie pushed her aunt out of her mind, much quicker than before. Bellatrix gave her an approving nod.
"You're getting good, but Dumbledore is not going to be announcing it with a wand. Though he is not as skilled as the Dark Lord, he still has the ability to enter you mind without the spell — you must learn to shield your mind, not just push me out," she instructed.
"I know," Cassiopeia muttered, letting out a breath.
Bellatrix walked up to her, and before she could even realise what she was doing, pulled down Cassie's left sleeve, squeezing her arm just above her dark mark. Cassiopeia whimpered in pain — even though she had the mark for two weeks now, her mark still hurt; sometimes the pain had gotten so bad that she had to fight the urge to try cut it off.
"No — you mustn't be weak Cassiopeia! This mark is a badge of honour given to you by the Dark Lord and very few are given it. Look at me."
Cassie reluctantly looked straight into her dark eyes.
"When I found out you were a Gryffindor I was afraid you had become like Sirius — a filthy traitor unwilling to uphold beliefs. I was glad to hear you weren't, but you still have much to prove to me and the Dark Lord. Your father has brought shame to your family, so you and Draco must succeed in order to make up for it. But just know that if your loyalty wavers even slightly, I won't hesitate to kill you myself, just like I did Sirius."
Bellatrix finally let go, signalling for her to leave. Cassiopeia quickly retreated out of the room, still rubbing her arm. What a brilliant and motivating speech, she thought. As much as a maniac her aunt was, she knew she didn't hate Cassiopeia — rather a strong feeling of disapproval for her considering that at glance, she wasn't exactly the ideal pureblood she expected for her niece. That, along with the fact that she was a lot less enthusiastic about performing the task than Draco, who seemed excited at the prospect of impressing the Dark Lord.
