"It took everything from me. My home, my family, it was like they'd never been there to begin with.
I wasn't lucky to be alive. that thing, that devil, it stole the memories of my family and I from the rest of the world. My best friend couldn't even remember who I was.
So I decided I'd get revenge. I became a devil hunter, I slaughtered those unholy abominations left and right, all so I'd finally be able to get revenge on the thing that took everything from me,"
"And then you killed it?"
Nayuta interrupted.
"Patience, Nayuta,"
You chided.
You began again,
"Killing a devil powerful enough to wipe the memories of everyone who knows you was a lot harder than I thought it'd be.
That monster spewed back the memories of my family back towards me, trying to slow me down.
If I hesitated for even a moment, I too would've been erased.
I had to get my revenge,"
You paused for a moment,
"God I sound so edgy! Ignore that,"
Then you continued,
"I don't remember how long it took, I just knew by the end of it, I was ready to die with that thing.
I ran my sword through it, and foolishly thinking I'd finished the job, I let my guard down,"
There was pain in your eyes as you spoke,
"I swear that monster laughed when it did it. When it robbed me of my next goal,"
You took a deep breath before saying,
"It robbed me of my mortality,"
The two of them raised a brow.
"What? Living forever sounds great! You get to see what Pizza will be like in the future,"
You chuckled at their naivety,
"I hadn't realized that yet. All I wanted back then was to reunite with my family in the afterlife or whatever happens after death.
It was about a year after that that I discovered my new purpose in life.
There was a young orphan boy, his parents had abandoned him on the side of the street.
I took care of him, gave him food, clothes, shelter.
But I couldn't adopt him. I wasn't ready for that yet.
I can't say I regret it though, he ended up getting adopted by a very nice family, and last I heard, he got married and started a family of his own,"
You sighed,
"But still, I wish I could've been there for him more.
But that taught me that there were ways to help people aside from killing devils, I could help people in a way that actually mattered!
This restaurant? It doubles as a shelter for the homeless.
Though I haven't had that many homeless people stay for a while now, you still might see one from time to time.
I'm able to fold the booth chairs down to create a small temporary shelter for them, and I give them free food.
It's not too much, but it's enough to help them get on their feet.
I'm also very good at convincing people to adopt young orphans.
After a while, immortality didn't seem so bad. It means that I can keep helping people until the day the sun blows up, and I'm perfectly happy with that,"
You made direct eye contact with the two of them (somehow),
"You two were right to be wary of me, especially with the people you've encountered in the past. But I assure you, I have no ill intent,"
"How come I couldn't control you?"
Nayuta interrogated.
"The immortality I was cursed with made my body impervious to all forces, and it seems like that applied to my mind and soul as well. That devil really didn't want me dying,"
You stood up and stretched your arms,
"I'm gonna take a nap now, wake me up before sundown, alright?"
And then you walked off to your room.
Nayuta looked at Denji with uncharacteristic concern,
"Denji, what'd he do to you?"
"Nothing..."
He was not going to tell his little sister how you made him cry just by being nice.
~•~
Days passed and the two children got more and more used to having you as a figure to rely on, and Denji was especially quick to latch onto that. A father figure who was actually nice? Yes please!
Nayuta still felt like something about you was fishy, but you gave her good food and spoiled her with candy and desserts, so she guessed that that was enough for her not to find a way to dispose of you.
Every now and then you'd sit down with Denji and listen to his woes, comforting him with your words and offering advice where you could.
His favorite part was getting hugged.
He was always the one hugging someone to give them comfort, it was good to finally be the one being comforted.
Being held like a small child was nice.
And so your happy family life continued, and seemed like it'd stay that way.
At least for now...
