"Happy birthday Aki!"

He young boy's eyes widened in shock as he stared at the large cake at the dining table, ten candles slightly submerged into the frosting with small flames.

"What is this?"

You ruffled his hair,
"Didn't you hear me the first time? It's your birthday! You're in the double digits now bud,"

A faint smile appeared on the black-haired boy's face as he enjoyed the soft glow of the candles. But something felt a little off.

"There's something else, isn't there?"

You looked away guiltily for a few moments before cracking,
"Alright, you got me. But it's nothing bad, I swear?"

He quirked a brow while crossing his arms.

"I got a promotion at work which came with a really nice bonus, so I bought us a house!"

Aki wasn't quite sure how to process the good news. A few years ago he'd lost everything, and now here he was, in the living room of your not-so-large apartment, celebrating his birthday and being confronted with the news of a move.

"Why're we moving? I thought you liked it here?"

The tone of his voice clued you in to his nervousness. You knew it probably wouldn't be too good having such a drastic change while he was still adapting to his new environment, but you also knew that an actual house would benefit him.

"I wanted to move somewhere a bit more... child friendly? It's closer to the school I'm planning on enrolling you in too,"

His mouth went slightly ajar,
"I have to go to school again?"

The sadness in his eyes made you want to hug him until the next century, but you knew he wouldn't quite like that (yet).

"I'm not gonna enroll you too soon, but at some point I think it'd be good for you to go back to school. Y'know, make some friends? Learn?"

The thought of homework and learning wasn't that nice, but making friends was a bit enticing to the boy. Before, he never had too many friends as he was always taking care of his brother, but now...

"I think you should blow out the candles before your cake gets topped with wax,"

He blinked for a moment before looking at his cake, blowing out the candles after making a wish.

'I wish that nothing bad happens to my new family'

You plucked the used candles out of the cake, placing them on a paper plate.

You the cut out a large slice of the [flavor] flavored cake, putting it on a plate which you served to your son, then portioning some out for yourself.

He stared at you for a bit, unsure on why you were looking at him.

"Well? You're the birthday boy, you get the first bite,"

Oh, so that's what it was.

He hesitantly took a bite from his birthday dessert, immediately cracking a smile as the flavor registered in his mind.

"It's [flavor]!"

You smiled at his enjoyment,
"Yup, I made sure to get your favorite,"

He appreciated you a lot. He'd been in the foster system for a quite some time, but it seemed like you were the only one who ever truly cared, who actually got him. He didn't want to admit it, but a part of him felt like you were better than his biological parents, and he hated himself for thinking like that.

He loved them, he really did, but they always doted on his younger brother, his sick little brother.

He hated that he felt like this. His parents were dead, and here he was thinking about how you were better than them.

He didn't deserve this birthday, he thought to himself. Not when he had thoughts like these.

"Aki? You okay buddy?"

You examined him with concern.

Just a few seconds ago there was a smile on his face, and now it was just... blank, as if all the emotion had been sucked away.

A tear fell from his eye. And then another, and another, and another until he was full on sobbing.

You began to panic a bit, what happened? Did you do something wrong?

Not knowing quite what to do, you placed a box in front of him, one that was wrapped in a fun wrapping paper.

"Here's your present!"

He kept crying.

"I don't deserve this..." he said between his sobs.

You found a tissue and began to wipe away his tears,
"What're you saying? Of course you do. You're a good kid Aki,"

He looked at you with questioning eyes,
"Really?"

You brought another tissue to his nose, helping him blow his nose.

"Yes, really. You didn't deserve what happened to you. Even through all the tough times, you've kept pushing on in your own way,"

Your words only made him cry harder, but not in the same type of sadness as before.

"C-can I have a hug please?"

You opened your arms,
"Of course,"

He jumped into your embrace, holding onto you tightly as his tears fell onto your shirt.

You'd definitely get him a therapist when he was older, he had a whole lot of stuff to deal with.

Eventually he calmed down, pulling away from you with a final sniffle.

"How about you open your gift? I think you'd like it,"

He looked at the box curiously before carefully opening it, being sure not to rip the wrapping paper too harshly.

And there it was, a brand new 3ds! It even came with a Pokémon game too!

Aki turned to you in disbelief. He knew how expensive things like these could be, and he was also shocked that he'd gotten anything at all!

With his old family, he never really got anything too special, and after that he was never in a foster home long enough to celebrate.

"You like your gift, bud?"

He gently put the 3ds down, going over to give you a hug. He didn't need to tell you how much he appreciated the gift, how much he appreciated you. You'd understand. You'd always understand.
