On a dark night, Denji wandered out of his room.

He'd already gone to bed, but just couldn't seem to fall asleep. He decided to venture out of his room alone, not wanting to force Pochita wake up just because he couldn't sleep.

The hallway was dark, but a warm light emitted from the living room.

Curious about this, he peered from the corner to find out who was still awake.

"And then my teacher said said that I did really good on my test too,"

"That's good to hear, Aki. I'm proud of you,"

Denji watched as you and your dark haired son enjoyed some hot cocoa on the couch, with Aki leaning onto your side.

He looked... happy.

Even though Denji didn't trust you, a part of him wanted to experience the same thing as well.

"Hey Aki, what do you think about Denji now that he's been here for a while?"

Denji held his breath. He really hoped Aki liked him as much as he liked him.

Your son took a long sip from his drink before answering,
"He's weird and talks to his dog, but he's fun. I hope he can stay here a little longer,"

You chuckled before pressing a kiss onto his head,
"I hope so too, bud,"

Denji felt a warm feeling swell up in his chest, did the two of you really like him that much?

Soon Aki had finished his drink, and with a yawn he stretched his arms.

"Want me to carry you to bed, Aki?"

The boy nodded tiredly.

Denji watched as you got off the couch to pick up your son and begin walking to the hallway.

Afraid of being caught awake when he shouldn't be, Denji quickly hid as you walked past him into Aki's room.

When the coast was clear, Denji emerged from his hiding spot and crept into the living room, making his way to the coffee table.

He saw the mugs you and Aki had drank out of, and found that one of them was still full of cocoa.

He took a sniff, and immediately knew he wanted some.

He did a double take to make sure no one was watching before picking up one of the mugs and slowly bringing it closer to his mouth.

"I could just make you your own mug, if you'd like. It's a lot better fresh,"

The boy nearly dropped the mug in shock.

"How did you get here so quietly?!"

You shrugged,
"What are you doing up so late anyways?"

He clutched the mug a little tighter,
"I couldn't sleep..."

"Well Denji, I can think of some ways to help with that. But before that, how about I fix you up a cup of cocoa?"

"Yes please!"

You smiled,
"Okay, just sit on the couch while u make it,"

He did as he was told, watching as you walked into the kitchen.

After a little bit, you came back to him with a mug of hot cocoa, topped with whipped cream.

"Careful it's hot,"

He blew on his drink for a little bit before putting his mouth on the rim of the mug. Then he paused.

He turned to you with a suspicious look,
"You didn't put anything weird in this, right?"

You shook your head,
"Cross my heart, I didn't,"

He decided that he'd trust you. Just this once.

He was glad he trusted you, because that must've been the best thing he'd ever drank! It was so sweet and smooth, and warmed him right up!

"This is yummy! Can Pochita have some too?"

"Sorry bud, but dogs really shouldn't have chocolate, it's not really good for them,"

He looked down disappointedly, but kept drinking his cocoa.

Once he was finished, he let out a satisfied sigh.

"That was good,"

You couldn't help but smile,
"I'm glad you think so. Now, would you like me to help you sleep?"

He was a bit hesitant, but if you were able to make a drink that good, then maybe you'd be able to help him.

"Alright bud, just lay your head down on my lap and relax,"

After a short moment, he did as he was told. He was a little bit shocked when he felt your fingers running through his hair, but couldn't help but admit it felt nice.

Something about this, something about you, it just made him feel safe and warm, which was a rare sensation for him.

"You must've gone through so much, Denji. But I'm here to tell you that that part of your life is over. You'll be safe and warm here,"

The sound of your voice gradually became a soothing hum as he grew sleepier and sleepier. After a final yawn, the boy had fallen asleep.

He was so young, he didn't deserve what happened to him.

You scooped the sleeping boy up into your arms and gently brought him to his room, placing him into his bed next to his beloved dog.

If things went right, you'd be able to adopt him, but that was all up to Denji.
