~STILL A FLASHBACK~

What a wonderful sight, to see everything covered in a fluffy blanket of snow. Not for Aki though. All he could think about was that day. The day he lost it all.

But he'd try to think more positively, the snow wasn't what killed his family, so he wouldn't hold any ire for it.

"The snow sure is pretty, right?"

His eyes didn't leave the window as he nodded slightly.

You ruffled his hair, which was a pretty risky move seeing as you've only been with him a month or so.

"Wanna go play outside?"

His head slowly turned to you as he contemplated his choices.

On one hand, it was undeniable that the death of his family would be on the forefront of his mind.

But on the other hand, here was a parental figure who actually wanted to spend some time with him.

He made his choice, and enjoyed how it made you smile.

"Great! I'll go get you some snow clothes, wait right here,"

~•~

"Haha! Nice one Aki!"

The boy smiled at your praise and the way that his snowball had hit you squarely on the stomach.

He was having fun, actually enjoying himself!

Though the thought of his family's demise still lingered in the back of his mind, most of his thought processes were occupied with trying not to get hit by a snowball.

But then he watched as you stared at your un-gloved hands, and felt a sense of dread seep into his heart.

"Hold on a sec, Aki. I'm gonna go inside and get some mittens,"

As he watched you walk back to the apartment complex, he felt his heart drop.

He couldn't let you go in there!

So he ran as fast as his legs could take him before hugging onto you tightly, preventing you from moving.

"Aki? What's wrong?"

"Don't go in there!"

You ran your hand over his head trying to coax him to look into your eyes.

There were tears welling up in the boy's eyes, and you could feel your heart clench at the sight.

You bent down to be eye level with him,
"Aki, could you tell me what's wrong?"

He sniffled,
"I don't want you to die..."

Huh?

"What do you mean, Aki?"

You wiped away some of his tears before he continued,
"I made my little brother go inside to get mittens... and then... and then..."

He bursted out into a sob, which seemed to be enough for you to figure out why he was an orphan.

You hugged the boy tightly,
"Oh Aki, I'm so sorry,"

He cried some more as you kept hugging him, patting his back soothingly.

"I'll be okay Aki,"

"Really?"

"I promise. I think we've played in the snow long enough, want to go inside and have some hot cocoa?"

He sniffled once more before nodding, and didn't fuss as you picked him up and carried him back to your apartment.

Though the rest of the day was pretty somber, Aki enjoyed watching a nice lighthearted movie on the couch, wrapped up in a blanket with some hot cocoa.

"Morning' Aki. Did you sleep well last night?"

The tired boy hummed in response as he sat down at the dining table, ready for whatever breakfast you'd prepared.

He couldn't help but feel a little excitement when he saw the stack of fluffy waffles placed in front of him.

"And now for the finished touch..."

You put some whipped cream on top of the waffles, pouring syrup all over before placing a strawberry on top.

"There! Enjoy Aki, it's all for you!"

He couldn't believe his eyes, he'd never had something like this before!

He savored every bite of his sweet breakfast, and couldn't help but wonder why you were spoiling him like this.

And then he saw it.

From the corner of his eye, he spotted a large brown envelope with the city's name in large letters.

Was this why you gave him such an extravagant breakfast? So he wouldn't feel bad when you told him you'd send him away?

"You're sending me away? Why?"

Tears welled up in his eyes.

"I thought you were gonna keep me... I don't wanna go to a new house again!"

You immediately went over to him and held his face in your hands, wiping away his tears as best as you could,
"No no no, I'm not sending you away! In fact, it's quite the opposite,"

He gave you a questioning look.

"I've actually been filling out the paperwork to adopt you,"

Aki's eyes widened.

"I know it's a big leap, but... we're gonna be a family!"

You hugged the boy tightly, and he wiped away the rest of tears on your shirt.

"You're telling the truth, right?"

"Of course,"

He hugged you tightly once more.

It seems you did make good on your promise. He found his home. You.

"Does this mean I can call you dad?"
