~before you adopted him~

Aki had lost everything. His home, his family, his entire way of life. He didn't know if life would ever feel like it'd go back to normal again, there was just too much hurt within him.

He floated about through foster homes, never really bonding with any one family. I mean, how could he when he just lost his?

Multiple families spoke to child protective services saying that Aki wasn't very receptive to them before he got sent to his next home.

This is how it went for two years, going from home to home, the hole in his heart only increasing. He wanted to get close to these people, he really did. But he just couldn't! There was something that was keeping him from really connecting with anyone, and he wasn't sure what.

And that scared him.

He knew that by the time he'd turn 18, he'd be considered an adult, and would just be shoved into the real world if he wasn't adopted. He didn't want that. He didn't want to be forced to be alone.

He so he decided that he'd be the one who'd make that choice for himself.

The plan was clear, when he'd reach his new foster home, he'd run away as soon as he could.

He waited patiently outside the door of your apartment carrying a duffel bag of the small amount of stuff he had.

You opened the door,
"You must be Aki! Come on in,"

He nodded slightly before entering your home.

"You can set your stuff down over there, I'd like you to come to the dining table with me for a bit,"

He did as you asked, and was soon sitting across from you at the table.

You told him a few ground rules of the house, and that you'd try to do whatever you could to make him comfortable.

The basic stuff.

He pretty much tuned everything out though, after all, why should he listen if he wasn't staying?

At a time he felt was late enough, he grabbed his duffel bag and left his room, heading for the door.

"It'd really be a shame if you left. I felt like we'd really get along,"

He almost jumped in surprise. He turned to see you sitting down on the couch.

"I- I-"

You took a sip from your mug,
"There are eighteen tell tale signs that a foster child is planning to run away. In the short time that I've known you, you've shown seven of them,"

Was he really that obvious? He thought he was being discreet!

"Aki, I know about your history in the system. I know that it can feel like you'll never find a place for you, but I want you to know that if you decide to stay, I'll do everything in my power to make you feel at home,"

He didn't want to listen to you, he didn't want to believe you.

But he was just so tired.

He was tired of going from home to home.

He was tired of feeling alone and isolated from the world.

If you promised to make things better, then maybe he'd give you a chance.

With a semi-sad expression, Aki sat down on the couch next to you before hesitantly leaning his head on your side.

He knew if this was going to work, he'd also have to put in the extra effort.

Whatever it was that you were drinking smelled great, so he took a little peek at whatever was in your mug.

You noticed this,
"It's hot cocoa. You want some?"

He nodded hesitantly.

"Alright then, I'll go fix you a mug. Want to watch?"

He didn't say anything as he stood up followed you to the kitchen.

He watched you pour the hot cocoa mix into the mug, pouring in hot water and milk.

(DONT COME AT ME A MIX OF WATER AND MILK IS GREAT FOR HOT COCOA).

After a bit of stirring, it seemed ready, but there was still something left to do.

"I'm all out of marshmallows, but whipped cream is just as good, if not better!"

You put a nice amount of whipped cream on his hot cocoa, then asked him,
"Want cinnamon on top?"

If he recalled correctly, you had cinnamon on yours.
"Yes please,"

You sprinkled some cinnamon onto the whipped cream before handing the mug to the boy.

"Be careful, it's still a bit hot,"

He blew on his drink for a while taking a careful sip.

A faint smile appeared on his face. It was almost a foreign feeling, smiling.

"It's yummy,"

You chuckled,
"I'm glad you think so,"

Maybe Aki would stay for a while. You seemed nice enough, though he knew this probably wouldn't be his last foster home.

But for this one moment, he'd be happy.
