Act 9: Tales Told in Hushed Tones

Shirayuki and Ayuna went on missions together in the following weeks, much to the latter's surprise. However, when Ayuna called Enjin out about it, he ignored her. During that time, the two learned to fight alongside each other more prominently, even if Ayuna would always deny it.

Right now, the two slayers were resting in an inn after dealing with a demon in the nearby mountain. "What does it say?" asked Shirayuki as she showed her hand to Ayuna. "You're a Kanoto now," Ayuna informed Shirayuki, making Shirayuki nod.

Hearing a hoot next to her, Shirayuki tilted her head. "Don't let it get to your head," warned Shiratori. Shirayuki scratched her beak, smiling at her owl. "You will be there to scold me if I do," she said, making the owl roll her eyes.

A few seconds later, they heard wings flopping before Enjin landed on Ayuna's shoulder. "A new mission?" she asked, making her crow nod. Then, Enjin raised one of his wings. "You are to go to Izayoi Town, where a demon has been spotted," he explained.

Nodding, Ayuna looked toward Shirayuki, who was patting her owl's head. "Is it another team mission?" she asked, which earned a scoff from Enjin. "You make it sound like you don't enjoy travelling with her," said the crow, making Ayuna roll her eyes in annoyance.

"You know my reasons," replied Ayuna as her tone went more serious, which made Enjin nod. "I understand, but you shouldn't be scared of it," he explained. Seeing her silence, he continued, "You saw for the past weeks that she is understanding," making Ayuna lower her head.

"...understanding and accepting aren't the same, you know?" she replied before standing up as Shirayuki turned to her. "Are we leaving?" wondered Shirayuki as Shiratori flew to sit on top of her head. "You're aware of our next mission?" asked Ayuna.

Nodding, Shirayuki smiled. "I am, but I was waiting for you," she replied, which made Ayuna scoff. "I'm the one ready right now, aren't I?" she countered. Chuckling, Shirayuki stood up before the two walked toward their next mission.

"Do you have more information on the town we're going to?" Ayuna wondered as Enjin flew next to her. "Unfortunately, no," he replied. "But it's a huge city," he revealed, which made Ayuna sigh before she glanced at Shirayuki.

"You hear that? Don't go wandering around this time," said Ayuna with some annoyance. Shirayuki tilted her head, smiling in her direction. "But it's not my fault if the smell of their food was good," she replied.

"You need to stop thinking just with your stomach," said Ayuna, which made Shirayuki smile. "I don't know if that's possible," she replied, causing Ayuna to groan. "If you promise not to wander too much..." she lingered as Shirayuki raised an eyebrow.

"...I will cook you what I did last time," she declared, making Shirayuki widen her eyes before she bowed. "I won't wander around on my own, Ayu-chan," she promised, which caused Ayuna's eyes to twitch.

"The heat on your face went up," realised Shirayuki when she raised her head. Then, putting the back of her hand on Ayuna's forehead, she tilted her head. "Are you sick?" she wondered with a smile.
