Since the defeat of the Tailed Beast Demons Six and Seven, the tides had seemed to turn in favour of the Demon Slayer Corps. Their relentless battle against the creatures of the night had reached new heights, with victories hard-won but also deeply satisfying.
In the months that followed, the slayers had continued their relentless pursuit of demons with renewed vigour, pushing themselves to the very limits of their abilities.
Soon, word had spread like wildfire about the events at the Swordsmith Village, where the Upper Moon Five and Four were slain in battle. The fight had been brutal, leaving scars on both sides, but the slayers had emerged victorious.
It was a monumental achievement that shifted the balance of power slightly in their favour. However, with those victories came a strange quiet. A silence that unsettled the most experienced of the hashira and even the newer slayers.
Demon activity slowed. Despite this, some still roamed the shadows, fending off the unprepared citizens. But the once unrelenting attack slowed to a trickle. Everyone expected the demons to retaliate with renewed ferocity, and Shirayuki was among those who believed that.
Though routine, Shirayuki's current mission carried an odd sense of urgency. She had been sent on a mission to track one of the demons that had evaded capture since the fall of the Upper Moons, one of the few that still lurked in the shadows, waiting to strike.
The village itself seemed peaceful, as if unaware of the battle that raged outside its borders. The people, huddled inside their homes, enjoyed their evening meals, completely oblivious to the dangers that crept in the night.
Shirayuki walked the outskirts of the village, listening for any sign of the demon she was tracking. She knew the demon she was tracking was here, and it was only a matter of time before it revealed itself.
*Rustle*
The faintest shift in the air was all the warning Shirayuki needed. Her body tensed, her hand drifting instinctively toward the hilt of her sword. Her senses flared before she inhaled softly, feeling the stillness of the air around her. "Ice Breathing Fifth Form:..." she trailed off.
*Whoosh*
A dark shape descended from the rooftops, its presence accompanied by a sudden gust of wind. The demon lunged at her, teeth bared, its eyes gleaming with malevolent hunger. But Shirayuki was ready. Her sword flashed in the dim light so fast that the demon barely had time to react.
"Silent Frostbite," said Shirayuki as her blade moved with deadly precision. The attack was over in the blink of an eye, a graceful arc that sliced clean through the demon's neck. Shirayuki landed in a crouch, her back to the demon, her sword already halfway back into its sheath.
*Click*
*Thud*
The sound of the sword sliding fully into the scabbard echoed through the village, and in that instant, the demon's head rolled from its shoulders. The body stood there for a heartbeat longer before crumbling into dust, disintegrating into nothing as the night breeze scattered its remains.
