132 AC, Sunspear

My darling boy,
We've have received word from King's Landing that Viserys has passed away and that House Hightower is rebelling towards the crown by naming one of their own the next King. Aegon has fled to Dragonstone with Cyrenna and has renounced his claim but for Aemond I do not know where he stands. At this time I am still hoping to find a way to resolve this in a way that avoids carnage.

Nevertheless, I can not deny the danger that we are all in until this matter is resolved. We have enough men and dragons to defend Dragonstone and word has been sent to our allies. Hopefully the Greens will surrender before a war breaks out but until I have secured the throne, I ask you, my dear Cassian, to be careful. This is not Dorne's fight and it would be foolish for our enemies to start a war with your kingdom but I've learned not to underestimate a cornered beast.

Be on your guard. Send word to your bannermen and warn them to be prepared. Starfall, Blackmont and Kingsgrave are the closest to Old Town and Wyl are the closest to the border and at the most risk for an assault. If all goes well, you should all be safe in Dorne, but we must all prepare for the worst.

These are dark times, but there is some light. In a better world, this letter would only have carried the news that I have given birth. You have another sister. We have named her Daenora. Her birth came early and she is smaller than you and your siblings, yet she is a strong little dragon. When all of this is over, I'll be delighted to introduce her to her eldest brother.

Be careful Cassian. You are your father's son and I know you will want to help your family. I assure you, we will be safe. As Prince of Dorne in these troublesome times, your first and foremost duty is to Dorne. Listen to your uncle. Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken. Those are the words of your house that I need you to remember in the moons to come.

Lēda jorrāelagon,
Aōha muña

Cassian had read the letter at least two dozen times since it arrived at Sunspear a day ago. Since his mother and siblings moved from Sunspear to Dragonstone, ravens regularly carried letters between the island and Dorne. When a servant handed Cassian a letter carrying his mother's seal he simply believed it to be another message with her wondering how he was fairing in Dorne or her telling him how her pregnancy was going.

While he'd been only around four namedays old when Aelia was born – and too young to understand the gravity of the situation – he clearly recalled her past two pregnancies. It unnerved him to see his mother – who always seemed so full of life and strength – weakened and bedridden. Everyone pretended there was little to worry about – yet the worry his uncle, Serra and most importantly Daemon, radiated whenever Valyria was in the birthing chamber.
