After getting the DeLorean towed, Doc expected the wheels, they were deteriorated after being in a mine for 70 years, he was going to have to fix that as well, he just couldn't believe that his future self was in the Old West with Chris, there could be a chance he could be in the history books.

You know when I was a kid I always wanted to be a cowboy, now knowing I'm going to spend my future in the past, sounds like a wonderful way to spend my retirement years said Doc

it just occurred to me Marty, since me and Chris ended up in 1885 perhaps we're now in the history books, I wonder could I go to the library and look ourselves up in the old newspaper archives? Doc asked Marty

I don't know Doc, you're the one who's always saying it's not too good to know much about your own destiny said Marty

You're right Marty, I know too much already better that I don't attempt to uncover the circumstances of my own future said Doc

Marty and Doc noticed his puppy Copernicus was in the cemetery so he called out to him to to come over

Copernicus, come on boy! Doc called out

Copernicus, come on let's go home boy Marty called out

But Copernicus wouldn't come over, he was leaning against one of two gravestones and whimpering, he was clearly upset about something, Marty went to find out what was wrong with him, Marty carried him away from the tombstones, he was shocked when he read the names of the tombstones.

Doc!, Doc!! come here quick!! Marty yelled out

What's wrong Marty?, you look like you've seen a ghost said Doc

You're not far off, Doc said Marty

Marty and Doc looked at the tombstones and to their shock and horror, they both said Here Lies Emmett Brown and Chris Brown, Marty couldn't believe it his little brother and his best friend were dead, but Doc was mortified to see his own name on a tombstone.

Great Scott!! said Doc

Check this out, Died September 7th 1885, that's one week after you and Chris wrote your letters said Marty

Marty took a look at the other Doc's gravestone and it said at the bottom "Erected in eternal memory by his beloved Clara", this created another mystery for him.

Who the hell is Clara? Marty asked Doc

Doc then read Chris' grave it said at the bottom "Erected in eternal memory by his friends Sarah Scott-Bain and O'Connor McCarlin the best friends a boy could ever have"

Sarah Scott-Bain and O'Connor McCarlin, Who on earth are those people?! said Doc

Marty took a picture of the tombstones as Doc read the inscription on the tombstones which explained how he and Chris both died

Shot in the back by Buford Tannen over a matter of 80 dollars?! Doc said as he read the inscription on both tombstones "What kind of a future do you call that?!"

At the town library....

Marty and Doc were looking through all newspaper archives and history books at the Hill Valley Public Library trying to find out about Buford Tannen and how he murdered the other Doc and Chris, Marty was able to find a book that contained information about Buford Tannen while Doc was looking through old photos from the 1800's trying to find a picture of him and Chris or 1885, Marty read the book out loud while Doc trailed through the photos in books.

Buford Tannen was a notorious gunman who's short temper and a tendency to drool earned him the nickname "Mad Dog" Marty read "he was quick on the trigger and bragged that he'd killed 12 men not including Indians or China men"

Does it mention me or Chris?, are we one of the 12? Doc asked frantically

"However this claim cannot be substantiated since precise records were not kept after Tannen shot a newspaper editor who printed an unfavourable story about him in 1884"

That's why we can't find anything said Marty

Doc was looking through the history books and he found something that Marty would interested in, he saw a photo of Marty and Chris' ancestors, his great-grandfather William McFly and his family.

Look, William McFly and family, your relatives said Doc as he showed Marty the picture

My great grandfather's name was William, that's him good looking guy said Marty as he looked at the picture

McFlys, but no Browns said Doc as looked through all the pictures

Maybe it was a mistake Doc, maybe those two graves weren't yours or Chris', there could've been another Emmett and Chris Brown in 1885 said Marty

By the way, did you have any relatives here back then? Marty asked Doc

The Browns didn't come to Hill Valley until 1908, then they were the Vaun Brauns, my father changed our name during the First World War said Doc as he told Marty his family history

Marty and Doc trailed through the mountains of photos until they came across two photos from 1885, one was of Doc and Chris in front of the clock that would be placed on the courthouse, and the other was of Chris with his friends Sarah Scott-Bain and O'Connor McCarlin at the first ever Hill Valley Summer Festival.

Great Scott! it's me and Chris Doc exclaimed "then it is true all of it, me and Chris go back there and get shot"

Marty looked at the two photos, he was given instructions to get back to 1985 but after finding out that his little brother and his best friend were going to get killed by one of Biff Tannen's ancestors, he had to do something, so he decided right then and there that when the Time Machine was fixed he wasn't gonna use it to go back to 1985, he was going to go back in time to 1885 and save Doc and Chris.

That's not gonna happen Doc, after you fix the time circuits and put new tires on the DeLorean I'm going back to 1885 I'm bringing you guys home said Marty
