After Chris' date with Sarah at the dance the previous night, but he still had some time to work on his songwriting, he plugged in his electric guitar into an amplifier (which he was given to him by Marty) and started working but after a while he was getting nowhere.
Ugh!, no that won't work said Chris as crumbled another sheet of lyrics
Chris threw his crumbled paper ball and threw it away into his trash cans which was full of rejected song ideas, but the paper inside missed the trash can and instead knocked over his box of cassette tapes and they fell to the floor as Chris picked them up and saw something he almost forgot about, amongst the albums and mixtapes he saw the mixtape he got from the Future in 2015 it was marked "The Seattle Scene" which was made by someone with the nickname "Insane Layne" and recorded in September of 1991, 6 years from now, Chris looked at the tape he finally decided to listen to it, he put got out his Walkman, put the tape inside and pressed down play.
The first song on the tape was a song called "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by a band called Nirvana, which according to the note left inside the tape case was written by someone named Kurt Cobain, the song was very good, the guitar was loud and raw, the lyrics were nonsense but made sense at the same time, the vocals were very scream-like but melodic, as soon as the song finished, he was amazed and was in musical bliss.
Another song on the tape was a song called "Jeremy" by a band called Pearl Jam, according to the lyrics told the story of a suicidal teenager, this was one song that made Chris cry cause he thought of O'Connor, he told him once that during his time living with his abusive aunt he himself once thought of ending it all, but luckily he found the strength to keep on living.
Another song that made him cry was another Nirvana song "Come As You Are" the lyrics were so clearly about someone wanting to be themselves but forced to be someone they're not, but the best part of the song was the guitar it sounded like a waterfall, he couldn't wait for the 1990's to hear more of what Nirvana had to offer, maybe someday when his band gets famous he could meet this Kurt Cobain guy and ask him what his lyrics.
He listened to the rest of tape, there were more songs by more bands that he had either never heard of or had yet to exist, bands with names like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, Sonic Youth, The Pixies, and Mudhoney, the lyrics were blunt and bold but poetic, the guitar riffs were loud, raw and sludgy but beautiful, the last song on the tape was a song by Mother Love Bone called "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns"
After listening to be entire tape, he was completely stunned, he just got a small glimpse of what rock music would sound like in the coming years, it was now 1985 and these songs weren't even written yet but he knew they were going to be something special, listening to that incredible music was what gave Chris the inspiration he needed, he quickly got out his pen and notebook and his guitar and lyrics started flowing out of him.
