Chapter 1

Rain gently splashes my face as I climb out my bedroom window and fly to sit on the roof. It's drizzling outside, but it's the first rain shower to come in the past two weeks.

Two weeks since the last rain storm. Two weeks since I fought Andrew. Two weeks since the world discovered that I am Thunder.

I haven't bothered to leave the house since it happened. I've been recovering from my concussion, I tell Caitlyn and Kathryn when they occasionally stop by to visit, however they know I'm just not ready to face the world yet. I don't know what will happen when I walk out into public again and I guess I've just been scared of everyone looking at me differently. Will they treat me like a celebrity or run away thinking I'll hurt them? I don't really want either of those reactions. I'd rather be treated like your average teenage girl from Iowa that no one takes much notice of. I suppose I should've thought of that before I decided to use my powers to help people.

I haven't talked to anyone other than Caitlyn, Kathryn, and my family. They don't have a way to get a hold of me; my phone is still broken. My dad says he is going to get me a new one for my birthday next week.

I lie down on the roof, close my eyes and just relax as I listen to the rain fall. I hear another sound, a door opening and closing.

"Kyleigh?"

I open my eyes.

Ryan?

I haven't talked to Ryan since the hospital. I don't know what I want to say to him, but I guess now is the time to figure it out.

"I know you're up there."

I stand up on the roof so I can see him. "What are you doing out here?"

"Trying to figure out where we stand," he replies.

I walk to the edge of the roof and float down to the ground.

Once I'm standing in front of him, Ryan asks, "Do you remember what you told me at the hospital? About us?"

"I said 'there's hope.'"

"Exactly," he says. "So, why have you been avoiding me?"

"Don't take it personally," I tell him. "I've been avoiding everybody."

"Why?"

"Because the world knows I can do this." I create lightning in my hands for a couple of seconds for .my explanation.

"That's not going to make me treat you any different."

"Ryan... You just don't understand how confusing everything is for me right now."

"Then tell me. You can't just sit in the roof and pretend the rest of the world doesn't exist. You need to talk to someone." I look toward the ground, but Ryan gently lifts my head to face him again. "And I'm here to listen."

I push his arm away. "My life has just changed so much lately. You wouldn't understand."

"I wouldn't understand change?" He questions. "You realize this whole mess has affected me, too. My brother went to prison, and I'm stuck living with my clean freak of an aunt! So, no, maybe I don't understand what it's like for the world to know you have super powers, but my life isn't exactly the same as it was before all of this happened either."

"Fine, I'll give you that," I say. "But this isn't just about Andrew. It started way before I knew he was out to get me. It's about me having superpowers. Did I ask to be struck by that bolt of lightning? No, I didn't, but it struck me anyway and now my life is the way it is. Sometimes I wish I never had these powers in the first place!"

"I believe everything happens for a reason."

"Yeah, everything happens for a reason," I agree as I sit on the ground, not caring if it is muddy. I lean my back against the side of my house. Ryan repeats my actions and sits next to me. He reaches over and holds my hand. I don't pull away.

Okay, I'll admit it. I've wanted Ryan back ever since I said we were over.

I rest my head on his shoulder.

"I missed you, Kyleigh," he says.

"I missed you, too, Ryan."

We sit for awhile in calm silence, other than the sound of the still falling rain, until we are interrupted by the back door of Ryan's house opening.

"Ryan, what are you doing in the rain?" A woman, Ryan's aunt I assume, says. He and I stand up and she notices me. "Oh, who's this?"

"Melanie, this is Kyleigh, my, uh..."

"Girlfriend," I finish for him. "I'm his girlfriend." I notice Ryan's eyes light up when I say it.

"Oh, yes, Kyleigh. Ryan has told me so much about you," Melanie says.

"Really?" I question, looking at Ryan who looks away shyly.

"Ryan, how about you come inside before you catch a cold. You may come in, too, dear," she tells me.

"No, that's fine," I decline. "I really like the rain."

"I guess I should go," Ryan says. "Call me."

"I don't have a phone," I remind him.

"Well, get a phone and then call me."

Ryan walks over to his house and as his aunt closes the door, I hear her shout, "Don't track mud on the carpet!"

I fly up to return to my place in the roof, remaining there until the rain quits some time later.

I make a promise to myself during that time: I will stop hiding from everyone. I will go out and see my friends again.

I have a final check up tomorrow to make sure I've fully recovered from my concussion. After that's over with, I'll be ready to face whatever life is going to throw me from now on.
