It was late when I made my way to the attic room; Ava was already there in her PJs and sleeping. I had a quick shower (one of the perks of being in the attic room you get your own shower and toilet). I got into my PJs and went to bed, I looked out the window and saw the stars shining brightly. And I wondered what it would be like to have parents.
“Does it get lonely up here?” A voice asked.
I turned towards the voice and saw Ava sitting on her bed looking at me.
“Yeah,” I said. “A bit”
“Can I ask you a question?”
“You just did,” I smiled.
“There are rumours saying that someone beat up Red Dog, is that true?”
I laughed, “Yes”
“He went to my old Children’s home,” Ava said.
“I was wondering where he went after his little bash up, he deserved it”
A frown came over Ava’s face, “Do you know who beat him up?”
I laughed harder.
Her frown changed to anger, “What’s so funny, do I have a pimple on my face?”
“No,” I laughed. “It’s not you”
She waited.
“The person who bashed Red Dog up, well you’re looking at him”
She looked at me, “Yeah right”
“No its true ask anyone here”
Ava rolled her eyes.
“I also was the one who beat up Clive,” I said.
She laughed and said, “You beating them up? I don’t believe you”
I shrugged, and tried to sleep.
“There are rumours about you as well,” Ava said.
“What like?” I asked.
“That you lived on the streets”
I remained silent, it was true what they said. Before I came here I had to defend myself from gangs, I learned a lot then. I had to look after myself and no one else; I learnt how to pickpocket without people catching me, and most nights I was hungry. It was the worst part of my life that I hated.
“Is it true?” Ava asked.
“Yeah,” I whispered.
I didn’t want to remember.
“What was it like?”
“Crap”
And with that I ignored her.
