Darkness closed us from both sides, I couldn’t see in the blackness. The shield I made was the only thing stopping the wall from crushing us. I hated this; Ava and I were buried under a ton of bricks, how original. Ava lay curled up, her eyes closed. I clenched my teeth trying to concentrate on the shield, I had to keep it up and that was damn hard! I used energy to save Ava and me from the guards, and now I was paying for it. I haven’t used this much energy in a long time.
“Ava,” I thought in my head, talking would break my concentration.
She opened her eyes and looked around, they widened.
“What’s happening?” She asked, but coughed from the dust around us, she switched to mind speak instead, “You okay Leo?”
“First of all yes I’m okay and second, we’re buried under bricks,” I replied.
“What!?” Ava coughed again.
“Could you not do that! I’m trying to concentrate as it is!” I snapped.
Ava stared at me and I felt her going through my thoughts, “The shield is the only thing keeping us from being crushed...shit!”
I nodded.
“How long can you hold it up?” She asked.
I looked at her.
“Not sure huh?”
I nodded again.
“Okay well you keep it up and I’ll...umm...wait.”
I laughed quietly at that.
“Ava,” I said suddenly getting an idea. “Can you reach Cooks mind?”
Ava’s eyes lit up and she nodded, she closed her eyes and relaxed her body. “Okay he’s on his way from shopping, wait! He’s arrived and wondering why there is emergency crews. He’s worried about us Leo.”
I sighed, “Can you contact him?”
“I can talk to him; you want me to tell him where we are, don’t you?” Ava said getting straight to the point.
I nodded.
“Alright but this might take awhile, Cooks going to be in for the shock of his life. People don’t take to kindly of me talking in their heads.
With that I returned my full attention to the shield.
******************************************************************
I don’t know how long I sat there holding the damn shield in place while Ava contacted Cook. I clenched my teeth together, trying to hold the shield.
“All right! Cooks on his way, he’s talking to the emergency crew now,” Ava finely said
I couldn’t reply; my whole attention was on this damn shield
“I know, I’m relieved too,” Ava said, her voice full of relief.
All of a sudden sunlight appeared from a hole, I felt Ava’s excitement.
“Thank goodness they found us!” Ava cried.
The hole got larger, and sunlight hit my face. The hole got bigger and larger while we waited; I still held the shield in place in case the bricks crushed us. A face appeared in the hole.
“Is anyone hurt here?” The person said his eyes roamed our little cave. “Anymore people?”
“No one’s hurt, its just us,” Ava replied. “We’re the only ones here.”
