Picnic (Monkey D. Luffy x Reader)

You lay out a blanket on the grass, putting down the basket on top of it. You and your crew – the Straw Hats – have recently landed at a spring island, and everyone was eager to get off the ship – so eager that they had left Luffy behind without any concern for who would keep an eye on him. Knowing he would only cause trouble, you had decided to accompany Luffy onto the island. And so, after grabbing your pre-packed lunches courtesy of Sanji, you find yourself setting up a picnic of sorts. The sky is a clear blue and filled with all kinds of different shapes of clouds.

Luffy laughs when he notices the clouds. "Wow! Look at them!" He points at one cloud specifically.

"That one looks like meat. Speaking of meat..." You hear an unnerving rumbling. Luffy frowns, sighing. "I'm hungry..."

You glance at the sky again, the sun still not high. "It's not even noon yet..." you say.

Luffy looks at you, his eyes pleading. "Come on, please? We can always go back to the Sunny if we need to refuel!"

You open your mouth, about to refuse him again, but your words fall flat as he meets your eyes. I can't say no to that face, you think.

Sighing, you concede. "Fine."

Luffy gives a whoop of joy as he sits down on the blanket and immediately tears into his lunch. You sit down, choosing not to eat yet, and instead look at the sky. It's stunning, the sky painting an idyllic picture. Just then, you hear the sound of air parting and only have time to turn and look before Luffy is jumping in front of you.

"What was that?" your voice is breathless, and you sense you just had a very real, very close brush with death. You peer around Luffy to see him holding a knife. Despite his appearing calm, you've known Luffy long enough to know when he's angry, and right now, you can feel it rolling off him. He stands without another word, but before you can ask him where he's going, he holds a hand in front of you as if to block you from moving forward.

"Stay here," he says, and with that, he's off in the direction the projectile has come from. Even though you want to obey your captain, you end up padding quietly into the woods not long after he leaves. After all, I'm supposed to keep an eye on him, right? You think. This is obviously the next step. You think this instead of facing the worry that had foolishly crept into your mind. As the captain, Luffy is the strongest member of the crew, and yet you still can't help but feel fear at the possibility of losing him. Add that to your growing affection for Luffy, and every day, you find yourself with a growing knot of – dare you say it's – love for your captain. Great, you think, irritated, as you trek through the woods. I've fallen for the densest man on the Grand Line. Finally, you reach a clearing, where you see Luffy speaking angrily to a person dressed in all black. Just then, Luffy punches him using a move none other than Gum-Gum Pistol. He seems to be ready to do more than that, but you can't bear the thought of him beating up a guy who did nothing more than fling a knife. You jump out of the brush to stand in front of Luffy.

"Y/N," he says, surprised. "I thought I told you to stay back."

"I know," you say. "But I don't want you to bang this guy up just for throwing a knife."

"Y/N, you could have gotten hurt. I wouldn't—" Luffy stops suddenly. "I wouldn't be able to bear the thought that I could have prevented it." In his eyes, you can see a shadow come over them, scars from the War of the Best still aching deep within him. Without sparing much more thought to it, you cross the space between and kiss him. He seems to freeze, and when you pull back, you notice his cheeks are lightly dusted with a blush.

"I'm not going anywhere, Luffy. And even if I were gravely injured, with a doctor like Chopper, I couldn't die if I tried."

He pulls you into a hug, and you feel his arms tight around you as if you were to fly away at any moment.

"Thank you, Y/N," he murmurs.

You would have remained there for longer, but the tell-tale rumble of Luffy's pit of a stomach interrupts the moment. He laughs. "I guess we never did get to eating." He releases you, and as you're about to leave, Luffy remembers the person he knocked unconscious. He glares, and with a maybe louder-than-necessary Gum-Gum Bazooka, they disappear into the sky. And with that, you turn and walk back, perfectly fine with letting him eat.
