You race up the stairs of the tallest building in town, heart pounding. You'd received a cryptic message from Ace – your boyfriend – and even though you'd been suspicious, fear had crept through you, enough to send you running.
My love, Y/N. If you're reading this, there's not much time left. Meet me up there?
Just three phrases. Nothing more. And all of a sudden. Just what is happening? Reaching the top, you fling the door open. Ace sits on the railing, feet dangling off.
"Ace," you say, breathless. You creep over to the edge to see him holding a pretty bouquet of blood-red roses. Long fingers pick idly at the petals, and they flutter towards the ground, blown by the invisible wind. "These were for you," he murmurs. "Until I saw you talking to Zoro."
You frown. "What?"
"You don't think I noticed how close you were standing? How you were flirting?" He spits that last word like poison, and it may as well be a knife driven into you.
"Ace, I would never cheat on you."
"I was heartbroken," he continues, seemingly having not heard you. "You know I can't live without you, Y/N. You're my life; my world." He drops the bouquet off the edge, then braces his hands on the railing. The knife twists deeper.
"I know, Ace," you say, voice breaking. "Please, just get off, and we can talk about this."
"Don't bother," he says listlessly. "You don't love me, right?"
"I do! Please, Ace!"
"You won't leave me for him, will you? 'Cause if you do..." He trails off, seeming to lean forward. You grab his arm, holding on as if your life depends on it – because it does. By now, tears are streaming like a river.
"Please, Ace! I love you," you sob. "I don't know what I'd do if you died!"
He glances back at you. "You mean it?"
"Yes!"
He smiles then, an empty look in his eyes. "I wish you meant that." And with that, he leans off the edge.
