The Sky is Dull and Misty (Trafalgar Law x Reader)

A/N: so i had an idea of how i wanted to portray Law after he'd been drinking for a bit but it didn't go as planned :,) maybe i'll try again some other time

also i'm so bad at writing this confession type style so forgive me

there is a possibility for 1-3 valentine's specials coming out on the 14th, but tbh I'm not really sure yet how I feel about any of the three, so we'll see

"Come on, Captain! Just this once," Bepo pleaded. Law doesn't respond, looking back at the textbook on his desk. The silence seems to stretch on for an eternity, but finally, he says, "Fine. But keep it down."

And that was what brought you to where you were on the deck, drinking and joking with your crewmates. Just then, you notice Law sitting a ways away, drinking, too. When did he get out here?  you think, amused.

"Oi, Captain!" Penguin shouts, obviously drunk. "Play something for us."

Law frowns. "Why?"

Put out by this answer, Penguin blinks, disappointed. But his wish is universal because someone else shouts, "Come on! Just one song! Isn't playing for others what music is for?" As more voices join in, Law sighs. "Fine, whatever. Give me a few minutes." Your crewmates whoop and cheer as Law retreats into his office and returns with a guitar. A guitar? I didn't know he could play, you think, intrigued. But you were also surprised at how he didn't show much resistance to the request to play. Maybe the alcohol loosened him up a bit, you think.

Law sits down on a crate, and the crew crowds around him. You find a good place to sit, and Law starts to play, strumming at a light pace.

"Der Himmel ist so trübe, es schient weder Mond noch Stern."  You're fascinated by the words, the sounds eloquent, and they roll off Law's tongue smoothly. He looks up, holding your gaze as he sings. "Das Mädchen das ich liebe das ist ja so weit enfernt."

You don't know what the song means, but something about how his eyes soften as he sings this phrase but at the same time stares into yours with such intent, like those words were meant for you, makes you blush, looking away. The song continues, and as it ends, the crew claps enthusiastically. When asked what the lyrics meant, Law just shrugs and walks away. As the celebration continues, you think back on the way he had looked at you, insatiably curious about what he meant.

Later, after everyone is passed out from their excessive drinking, you find yourself peering into Law's office. He sits at his desk, plucking the strings of the guitar idly. "Y/N- ya ," he murmurs, not looking up.

"Hey," you say, standing in the doorway. You shift awkwardly. "I wanted to ask about the song you played earlier."

"It's called 'Der Himmel ist so trübe.' It's a song I learned when I was little."

"What do the lyrics mean?" you press.

He pauses for a moment, his strumming stopping. Then he starts again, the action seeming forced. "The sky is dull and misty," he sings softly. "No moon nor star to be seen. The girl whom I love so much is so far away from me." Just like before, he looks up, holding your gaze. He continues to sing it and finishes, "We both will stay forever, in deepest love, so true. The hours we spend together are so blissful for me and you." He's silent after that last part, but then he speaks.

"The song was for you," he says quietly. "I knew you'd ask for a translation, so..." He trails off, using a hand to stifle the guitar's sound.

"It was lovely. It is lovely," you say. "And I..." You walk toward him, and Law stands. You take his hand in both of yours. "I had no idea you felt the same way," you murmur. He puts his other hand on your face, running his thumb tenderly over your cheek.

"I guess I had to hide behind another language to tell you," he says. You laugh, and with a smile, Law leans in, kissing you. His lips are gentle and patient against yours, in a way that leaves you blushing when he pulls away and desiring more. Despite this, you grin. "For the record, I think I like you better when you've got a little alcohol in you."

He scowls half-heartedly. "Shut up."
