Worth It (Sanji x Reader) (WCI Spoilers)

A/N: I hate to see him so sad 😭

this was requested by an AO3 user named @lily_writesssfanfiction. I'm finally on whole cake so I wrote this!!! I really should be writing the new year's stuff right now, but I couldn't resist posting, so here it is! also, if you HAVE NOT watched/read whole cake, you could consider this to contain spoilers. they're not anything too terrible UNLESS you're a big Sanji fan, or you've never been spoiled before. either way, read with caution!

You inch down the hallway, back to the wall, eyes alert. After Luffy and Nami had been caught by Mont-D'or, the rescue Sanji team had been down to just you. You peer around a corner and see a blond-haired man sitting down against the wall with his head in his hands. That's Sanji! You pad over to him, holding out your hand, ready to use your devil fruit – the Warp-Warp fruit, capable of warping the user and other people short distances. You had already staked out an empty room to be used. All I need to do is touch him. You reach Sanji and brush your fingers against his arm just as he looks up. His eyes widen in surprise. "Y/N-san - "

You land in the other room, Sanji looking around. "What? Y/N-san , what are you doing here?"

You glance around, checking that the room is indeed empty. "Keep it down. There might be chess soldiers around."

He frowns. "Why are you here?" he asks again.

You cast him a look. "What kind of question is that? We're here to take you back, of course."

He sighs, and it's as if a huge weight has landed on him as his face shadows. "Oh."

"We've already spent too much time here," you say. "Luffy and Nami have been captured, but we'll get them out. I have a plan. In the meantime-"

"You need to leave," Sanji says, his voice suddenly cold and aloof. You blink in surprise.

"What?"

"I already told your idiot captain I don't associate with pirate scum."

'Your?' Not 'our?' Idiot captain?' And 'pirate scum'...? As you stew over his word choice, Sanji speaks again.

"I already made a deal... with Big Mom. You guys can escape, and they won't harm you."

The rest of his sentence falls off, forgotten, as the first part echoes in your mind. A deal... with Big Mom. "For what." Your words are flat.

"What?"

You stalk toward Sanji with an anger that surprises even you and grab him by the shirt. "You made a deal with Big Mom. For what?"

" To marry Pudding," he murmurs.

"And then what?"

"And then you guys will go on with your lives. Luffy will become King of the Pirates. My family will have all the power they desire."

"And what of you?"

Sanji looks down, his expression stormy. He tears your hand off his shirt. "I'll be fine. You guys don't need a useless cook like me. My father and brothers don't need a useless son like me. I'll disappear without any trouble... And then, maybe in that, I will be useful."

You're stunned by his words, shocked silent. "You... don't believe that, do you?"

Sanji smiles bitterly, a single tear streaking down his face. "It's true."

At this, your heart breaks, fractures, shatters for Sanji, for the lie that he has undoubtedly been told so many times, the lie that he has undoubtedly repeated to himself every day for his entire life. You embrace him, not speaking, holding him close, wanting – no, needing to comfort him. Sanji freezes, and you can hear the fast pace of his heart as he just stands there. Then, all at once, as if a dam has broken, he hugs you back, taking in a shuddering breath as he starts to cry.

"Sanji," you murmur. "I don't know what you've been told by your family. By anyone else. But what I do know is that the crew needs you. Luffy needs you. I need you," you add quietly. He only cries harder, his body shaking, and you hold him ever closer. When the tears subside enough to speak, Sanji mumbles, "Y/N-san ... you really mean that...?"

"With all my heart."
