Summary: Luz secretly figures out how to make a new portal, knowing her mom wants her to not get her hopes up again. However, the joy of making a new portal is ruined when she learns the truth of what happened to the first portal she made.
(Sequel to "Nothing Good")
3 years had passed since the portal was destroyed, and Camila couldn't be happier. She had both her daughters, her biological and adopted, and the only magic to be seen were the few magical items Vee had in case she needed to shapeshift, though she hardly did. And the Boiling Isles were never brought up anymore.
Luz was still clinging to the memories of that place for a few months, but now it was like it never happened. She still loved fantasy and her Azura books, but no more talk of real magic. No more talk of glyphs. No more talk of demons. No more talk of Palismen. No more talk of her batata.
No more talk of the Owl Lady.
It wasn't perfect, Luz had been getting in trouble for random outbursts of anger, even getting suspended for getting in a fight. Though, from what Camila saw, it wasn't much of a fight with Luz getting little more than a scratch or bruise and the other kid...was best not to think about. And there was the unexpected talk Camila had with Luz's therapist about prescribing Luz antidepressants, which of course she allowed and found Luz a great psychiatrist. Life was good enough. No more magic, no more portals, no more problems.
The years had passed quickly, much too quick for Camila's liking, but it wasn't like she could get back the time she lost. Vee was going to the same college as her partner Masha and had plans to move in with them and Luz got into a community college to get some basic credits while she built up her portfolio to get into a fancy creative arts college and go into writing, so she'd still be at home for a few more years. Everything was going as close to perfect as they could go.
Or so Camila assumed.
One night, she was tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep. With a sigh, Camila got up and went into the kitchen to get a glass of water. Once she had drank it, she put the cup in the sink and was about to go back to bed when she heard a creak coming from the staircase. Silently, Camila looked out of the kitchen and saw Luz coming down with a bag stuffed with something, and wearing a purple hoodie and jeans with a new cat-ear headband. She unlocked the door and left. Camila crept towards the front door and heard Luz's car starting.
"Where is she going?" Camila whispered to herself.
She immediately went upstairs and changed, having the Find-A-Phone app pulled up as she did, keeping an eye on where Luz went. After a safe enough time had passed that Luz wouldn't see her trailing her, she went to her car, started it, and started to follow the route Luz went. She left the neighborhood, and drove around the downtown area for a while, eventually reaching Main Street. She hit a dead end in the road and had to start trailing Luz on foot. It wasn't like there were any streets going through the woods.
Eventually, Luz's marker on the app stopped in the middle of the abandoned graveyard. Camila kept going, getting a strange sense of deja vu as she went through the woods trying to find Luz at the graveyard.
