Chapter 26: Forgiveness, trust and one little smooch.
*Harry's POV*
I could only stare open mouthed at the beautiful girl in front of me. She wore some strange clothing, and had make-up smeared across her face. But I only payed attention to her eyes. They way she looked at me with such hope, glued my broken heart back together. I had some sort if debate going on in my head.
Don't take her back.
But she came back for me.
She made another mean article about you.
It didn't do anymore damage.
She said she hated you.
Then why is she here?
Tell her to go away. She'll only hurt you more.
But I love her.
The boys stared awkwardly at us until Liam shoved them out the door, mumbling something about getting lunch. Maddy had started crying. I suppose I had too. I wasn't sure what you were supposed to do in moments like these. I looked down and saw the slowly melting ice cream spilled on the floor, along with the spoon. I picked them up and walked to the kitchen where I put thrice cream in the freezer and the spoon in the sink. I took several deep breaths before grabbing a handful of paper towels and walking back towards Maddy. She hadn't moved. I glanced at her, then wiped up the ice cream that had gotten on the floor. I went back into the kitchen to throw away the paper towels and once again back to Maddy. She stood there with wide, nervous eyes. I guess it would be my job to kill the awkwardness she had created. I walked until I was a foot away from her.
"Let me take your coat." I whispered formally. Maddy blinked a few times, then removed her coat and handed it to me. I hung it on the nearby coat hook. I bent down on my knees in front of Maddy, and saw her stiffen. Very slowly, as if she might bolt like a rabbit, I took her left foot in my hand, and removed her shoe. I did the same with her right, and stood back up to my full height.
"Would you like a change of clothes?" I asked without meeting her eyes. She nodded, so I went into my room and found a t-shirt and an old pair of basketball shorts. I returned to Maddy and gave them to her. She swallowed and cautiously walked towards the loo. Once she was inside, I released the breath I had been holding. I started boiling some water for tea, and straightened up the living room a bit. I heard the sink running, and then shut off. The tea was done so I set it down in the living room and found some scones in the pantry. I set those out on a fancy platter and waited on the living room couch.
Maddy came out a few seconds later. She had removed the make-up from her face, and had pulled her hair back into a messy ponytail. My t-shirt hung loosely around her, and the basketball shorts went a bit past her knees. I realized I was checking her out and quickly looked away. Maddy sat in the other end of the couch, and stared at the floor. I handed her a cup of tea and a scone which she gladly took. We were silent as we ate and drank.
"So..um. How have you been, Harry?" Maddy quietly asked, breaking the silence. I considered telling her the truth. I was horrible. Without her, I cried constantly. I locked myself away in my room and drowned my sorrows in ice cream.
"Brilliant. I mean..um..I've been good." I fished my tea and set the cup back on the table. Maddy nodded and fiddled with the handle on her tea cup.
"So, why are you here?" I asked her, before I realized how rude that sounded. I saw hurt flash across Maddy's face, but it was quickly concealed with a cough.
"I missed you." She mumbled while trying to hide her watery eyes. When I didn't respond, she stood up.
"I'm sorry, Harry. Really, honestly, I am. I still love you. I always will. I was hoping you felt the same, but...I guess not. Bye." She hurried off towards the door. I heard the door open, but I didn't hear it close. I walked to the front door and saw Maddy standing there, looking at the hallway. She held her coat and had her shoes on.
"Where are you going?" I asked her. She didn't turn around. I walked around her, so I could see her face. Her eyes dropped to my feet, and she shook her head. I gently grabbed her coat, and threw it back inside the flat. Then I took her hands and walked her backwards through the door. I shut the door behind me with my foot and kept steering her throughout the flat. Soon her back was pressed up against a wall, and I put my hands on either side if her head. There was no escape. I leaned in close as I spoke.
"I love you. I never stopped. Without you, I was so hurt. I'm not letting you get away so easily again." My breath fanned over her face. I leaned in closer until our lips were almost touching.
"What about the other girl??" Maddy said quickly. I leaned back just enough so I could look into her eyes. Oh, how I had missed that blue color.
"She means nothing to me. I was lonely and sad. I'm sorry." I told her.
"Well I want to make sure you won't go cheat on me. It kind of hurts to think you've got a hot model on speed dial." Maddy spat.
"It kind of hurts me to think you're going to use me for your mum's magazine." I retorted. I watched as she processed that. Suddenly, I was shoved backwards, and Maddy stormed towards the front door again.
"Then why didn't you just let me go?" She screamed while picking up her coat. I sprinted to her and trapped her in a hug before she could leave. She squirmed and protested in my arms, but I held her tightly to my chest. She stopped moving after a while, and the only thing you could hear was our heavy breathing. I kept my arms tight around her waist.
"I can't let you go because I love you too much. And I can't survive without you. We both made mistakes. I'd rather lose this argument to you than lose you to this argument. We just need to trust each other. Do you trust me?" My fingers brushed her bare stomach accidentally and she shivered. I felt her shrug.
"Well, I trust you." I said, and I released her. Maddy stumbled away from me. She looked at the door then back into my eyes. Her posture relaxed.
"I trust you too." She said. I slowly walked up to her and caressed her cheek. She leaned her face into my hand.
"Can I kiss you?" I asked her, smiling slightly.
She rolled her eyes. "You don't have to ask, Haz. I trust you, remember? But since you did ask..no. You can't kiss me." She said. I felt my eyebrows pull together in confusion. Maddy laughed and it sounded like wind chimes.
"What I mean is, I want to kiss you." She said before smashing our hungry lips together.
