The red butterflies knew immediately what happened to Sukuna, leaving as soon as they brought Satoru to the deepest part of the forest. However, they didn't return back to their master's side, instead they went after Megumi. Even when they are aware that the child of the unseen can't escape from the distortion, the Blue Butterfly can appear again and save him.

If this happens, then this would mean that the Red Butterfly had lost, and he would be back to be a grotesque creature without having another opportunity of recuperating his true form. That's why the red butterflies did not have any other option than to bring Megumi to their master, that way he can devour his life and soul before Suguru manages to find him first.

Being injured, the Golden Butterfly did not manage to get that far away from the shrine. Furthermore, the white butterfly suddenly stopped guiding him, leaving him no option than to hide behind a tree for the time being. He only got back up to his feet when he heard the voice of Satoru for the second time, telling him that he must continue on following the butterfly until Suguru arrives to save him.

Megumi hasn't forgotten what the Blue Butterfly said to him the last time they saw each other and the atrocious thing he has done against a human, so he wasn't sure if it was a good idea to trust him. But since there was no time to question Satoru, he obeyed and followed the butterfly when it started to guide him once again. Yet, by that time, the red butterflies had already spotted him from a far going after him in complete silence.

Megumi did not have the sightless idea that the butterflies of Sukuna had found him nor that he was being followed by them, not until they surrounded him with the only purpose of taking him back to their master.

"By being here all alone and the state you are in, we can say for sure that your strike of luck has finally ended," the red butterflies declared, landing on different parts of Megumi's body.

The white butterfly shined with intensity as soon as that happened, its white light making a few of the red butterflies to retreat back. Megumi took this opportunity to continue ahead, ignoring the pain in his left eye that wanted him to surrender in this precise moment.

However, the red butterflies did not give up, lading on his body once again when the light faded out. The white butterfly shined for a second time, but being only one, its light wasn't enough to keep at bay every single red butterfly.

At this point, Megumi would be engulfed by them and brought back to their master. If that happens, then all hope would be lost and Sukuna would have won. But not being present, there wasn't anything else Satoru could do to save the child of the unseen.

The truth is, that he doesn't want to give up on him nor lose hope, especially after a light of hope had recently appeared in this predicament. Yet the desperation started to consume his mind and heart, causing the light of his butterfly to grow weaker and weaker as the despair took more terrain inside of him.

The golden butterflies felt the despair through Satoru's butterfly and the fear from their master as well, shining in a golden light to help the white butterfly. There was other reason besides not having a deep connection with Megumi that stopped them from helping him, and it had to do with Suguru. But being at the edge of death, they decided to go against the order of the Blue Butterfly.

The intensity of the light was so strong that a few red butterflies immediately retreated in fright, while the others that remained perched on Megumi's body fell to the ground dead along with some golden butterflies that soon turned into bright dust and drifted away to the sky.

The golden butterflies can purify the darkness from within, causing its opponent to met their demise if their heart had already been completely tainted by malice. However it comes with a price; a few golden butterflies will die when the limit of darkness they can handle has been reached.
