Satoru had already passed away when the blue butterflies arrived at the Shadows' Forest, yet he opened his eyes after a few hours had passed. By that time, Suguru was already by his side. He was met by a unfamiliar ceiling, the events that happened today flashing through his mind like an old film.
Thanks to the wish the Blue Butterfly fulfilled by his own accord, the soul of Satoru has been saved, meaning that he stopped him from entering the circle of reincarnation upon immediate death. It was the first time he have saved someone's soul, but he knew all along that he could fulfill any kind of wish. Hence, he never doubted.
This wish has caused more damage to his own soul and killed more of his butterflies than any other wish, however, it was a fair price to pay to save someone so precious. Suguru saw it this way at least, not regretting putting his life at risk for the sake of Satoru. That's why he did not think twice about his decision, not even to think about the consequences that could bring in the future by accepting Sukuna's demands.
The good thing is that he can now save the souls of the children the Red Butterfly will consume from becoming corrupted, and that he doesn't have to worry of becoming the next victim. Although it was so tragic and sad that it could not be said the same about Riko, since her life and soul was already gone by the time both of them arrived.
"You're finally awake," the Blue Butterfly announced his presence the moment he realized that Satoru was awake, getting closer to the futon he's lying and sitting on the tatami next to him. "You're probably confused about what happened."
Suguru wasn't wrong, Satoru indeed was confused as why he was still alive. Even when everything felt so unreal, he doubted that everything that happened throughout the course of the day was just a dream. Being in a unknown place with his friend and the persistent feeling of something sharp slitting the flesh of his neck confirmed it.
The white-haired young man sat up, touching with the tips of his fingers his neck, but he did not feel anything. No pain. No injury. No scar. "The answer 'no', would be a lie. However, I can guess that I have met my demise."
"You are not wrong. You indeed died," Suguru confirmed. "Although now you don't have to worry about Sukuna consuming your life and soul."
Satoru rolled up the sleeves of his black kimono, seeing that the black marks had vanished. "I was prepared to die anyway, since that was my only salvation. But how did you save me?"
"I fulfilled a wish to save your soul. I did it by my own accord, so I hope you don't mind that from now on you will cast away your life as a human."
Satoru gawked. "Does that means I'm a ghost now?"
Suguru chuckled. "Not exactly. You still have your body because of my wish, but now you have become one of the children of the unseen. You will become the White Butterfly once the Black Butterfly gives you his blessing. Once that happens, the task of escorting the souls of the dead in the Human Realm to the circle of rebirth will fall on your hands. Well, only if he accepts. But there's no need to worry about that, I'll make sure he doesn't have any other option than to comply."
By hearing about such task, Satoru could guess that the previous White Butterfly had passed away. "Who was the White Butterfly before me?"
"My mother, but she passed away sometime ago," Suguru's voice did not change, nor it caused him sadness to speak about his mother. "Her butterflies remained in the Human Realm to guide the souls of the dead, it had been like that since that tragic day. However, once the Black Butterfly gives you his blessing, she will enter the circle of rebirth."
Not knowing what to say about that matter, Satoru changed the conversation and asked. "Where are we?"
Suguru did not mind responding to his friend's question, nor that he changed the conversation. "We are in the Shadows' Forest, where the door that leads to the Butterfly's Realm is hidden."
