Micky

"So if me and Lani beat you, you will take us to get food?" I asked.

"Yeah,"

We walked to the end of the street. I squatted down to tie my shoes, Lani stretched her legs. "You know Kayon is fast right?"

"You know I run track back home right?" I reminded her.

"Stop plotting, no cheating." Kayon stood on the other side of me."

"Who needs to? Imma smoke you fair and scare."

"Keep telling yourself that."

"Gma, you ready?" She stood at the other end.

"Yes,"

We nodded.

"On you mark, get set........go!" She yelled.

We all took off, Kayon had the lead but I caught him at the end. We turned to look at her, breathing hard. "So?"

"Micky won,"

"Hell yeah!" Malani jumped on my back.

"Free food," she smiled.

"Let's go again cause ain't no way,"

"You lost, just accept defeat." I teased him.

"Where hall wanna go?"

"I'm thinking hibachi?" I turned to Lani.

"I'm thinking I agree."

"Well, as long as someone bring me some food back." Gma said.

"Are we going to Shayla cookout?" Lani asked.

"Shayla?" I asked.

"Shayla is Lonzo auntie, she have a big cookout every summer, the whole hood come out. They give away school supplies and you can win gift cards, it's a big event." Kayon took a sip of his water.

"Oh, then we should go. I wouldn't mind winning a few gift cards." I was very competitive.

"It's Lonzo family, are you sure?" He asked.

"Yes, I'm not sweatin that. We going." We followed Gma in the house.

We postponed dinner for another time since there would be food at the cookout. We all took a while getting dressed, Malani of course taking the longest. We were laughing and listening to music on the way there, when we pulled up, I saw he wasn't exaggerating about it being a huge event. There were people all over, old, young, families, black, white, Latino. There was food, bounce houses, face painting, ice cream truck, a stage with a band playing. "This is nice, Lonzo family sponsors this entire thing?"

"His dads sister, they are a little more stabled on his dads side, his family very involved in the community."

"I see," I smiled but deep inside feeling a bit insecure.

"Sean!" Kayon called out, seeing him with some boys I never saw him with. Sean looked back and turned back towards whoever he was with, completely ignoring him. "Damn, it's like that..." Kayon just nodded.

"Why he on that?" I asked.

"He knows about me and Lonzo recent interest in guys, and I guess he ain't with it."

"I'm sorry, I lost a bunch of friends when they found out about me too, I even had to fight a few of them. It got bad, I had to switch schools, but now they just don't say anything to me."

Kayon

All I could think about was did Lonzo know he was acting like that? If he did, I needed to check on him. I pulled out my phone while Micky was looking at some stuff with Malani.
