I woke up in her bed this morning for the first time in weeks. She has been coming to my room in the night but when I saw her exhaustion had overtaken her to sleep for so long last night, I had to make sure she was okay. I didn't expect her to wake up with such intense energy but it was truly a night of relief.
The sun was barely rising and urging me to start another day, ending another night of paradise and escapism. I grabbed my clothes I so carelessly through aside, disgusted for having to put on dirty clothes again but I needed to in ordered to get to my clean uniform in my room. After dressing, I kissed her forehead while she slept, relieved she was resting well as I went to my room.
I dressed in my clean and perfectly folded uniform, ensuring I looked the part of having everything in control. I felt for the first time in a long time out of control of things because I'm not able to protect her and my future child from the possibility of my death if I stay with the scouts. But if I completely stay inside the walls though, I can never help humanity again. Personal vs. The greater good, who ever knows the right answer?
After waking up the others and starting the day, I announced to everyone that I would be leaving with her to meet with Erwin and the day was up to them, as well as a list of chores to be completed when I returned. We prepared our horses and went to the Headquarters of the Scout's, riding in silence as the pressure of what to do next weighed on our minds.
When we arrived, Erwin greeted us promptly and took us to his office together.
"Levi, we need to make a decision soon. I cannot delay the scouting mission forever," Erwin spoke, getting straight to the point.
"I never asked you to delay, but I have made my choice," Just as I was about to tell him, she interrupted. I was surprised to see what she had to say in the midst of this.
"Actually, I want to continue to help the scouts, from a planning and strategical stance. I know I am unable to use any gear or participate in missions, but I want to continue being beneficial to the Survey corps!" She exclaimed with passion in her eyes. She surprised me somewhat, but I know she joined the scouts for more than finding me.
Erwin took a moment to process her proposition.
"It's worth considering, she will give me hell if we don't even acknowledge the idea. Besides, she wasn't only the best in her class at fighting, she also was in top for academics," I spoke up with her. I saw her smile at my help but I kept my expression cool.
Erwin nodded, not giving us an idea what was going on through his head. "Would you step out please? I think I need to speak to Levi alone for a moment," he said. I wasn't sure what he was planning but I nodded and she removed herself the office, closing the door beind her
"Well, what's this all about?" I asked with my arms crossed. Erwin stayed at his desk, looking up at me with seriouness in his eyes.
"What is your intentions with her?" He asked. I closed my eyes and sighed at his question.
"What do you think? I intend to marry her of course. She is the mother of my child," I stated matter of factly. My answer nevertheless surprised him as he nodded.
"If this is what you want, I won't stand in the way. Are you staying in the scouts?" He asked me again.
I took a second to make sure I was making the right choice. I hadn't discussed it with her yet, but I figured she would understand being how intent she was in helping the regiment despite her pregnancy. Most women would run the first chance they get.
"Humanity needs me. My new family will also, but I don't plan to die. I am staying in the scouts," I stated firmly. Erwin nodded in agreeance with a smile on his face.
"Very well, I'm happy to hear that. I'll be able to get you a private house a few hundred yards from your current living situation so you can continue to be close to the team but have privacy for your family. Once you are married, it's yours. Consider it a wedding gift," he explained. I was surprised to learn he already had a plan for us as I nodded in appreciation at his offer.
"But Levi, don't die on them, or on us," he stated seriously. I nodded again.
"I've never planned on it," I replied. We invited her back in where Erwin accepted her idea of working with strategical planning and some record keeping to assist with the scouts, meaning she didn't need to quit. After arranging her new work schedule, we prepared our horses to return home. At the last second, Erwin stopped me to whisper to me.
"Best to marry quickly in order to avoid any rumors," I hadn't considered the fact of public opinion. It didn't matter to me, or much to her. But it still could affect how seriously her work was taken, so I agreed. Not to mention, we could only keep our team from knowing the truth for so long.
Once we returned to the house and ate our fill of the meal, we bid everyone goodnight and rejoined later together in my room. I was sipping on my black tea as she sat on my bed, looking out my window into the night sky.
Her black hair and soft skin glimmered in the moonlight with natural elegance. I never considered how I would propose to her, I knew we didn't need anything fancy. She was perfect as she is, and didn't need to flaunt in front of others. I took another sip of tea and I turned to speak to her.
"So, when do you suppose we get married?" I asked her calmly as she turned back to me with a shocked look on her face. I smiled, amused at her reaction. "It's best to get it done with before your bump starts to show. Do you accept me proposal?" I asked.
I tried to make the sound of my heart beating loudly quiet as I listened for her response, eagerly waiting. I made it sound as if it was only for her pregnancy, but the truth was deeper than that by far.
