Damiano

"The truck driver was charged with manslaughter in court today. He was also intoxicated"

I finish off my bottle of beer and chuck it across the room. Somehow the bottle lands in the recycling bin and that makes me chuckle.

"You're also being charged for DUI, causing bodily harm. And loss of license for 7 years"

My gut sinks.

I knew I was going to get charged for driving intoxicated and lose my license for a while. But not for that long.

John, my lawyer, sighs while handing me a stack of papers stating my charges.

I skim the first paragraph and my heart stops.

David, Damiano charged with accessory to manslaughter, DUI and causing grievous bodily harm leading to death; sentence to 7 years imprisonment, parole of 6. No bail granted.

I start to panic.

David, Damiano originally charged with accessory to manslaughter, DUI and causing grievous bodily harm leading to death; pleaded guilty on behalf of a lawyer upon absence, charges reduced to DUI, causing grievous bodily harm and loss of license for 7 years; sentence to 60 days in jail.

60 days jail?

"John- what-"

"It's the best i could do. Unfortunately the justice system doesn't care that you're so young. But there is a way for you to get out of the jail sentence. But you're not going to like it" John sighs.

Somehow I know what he's about to say. And I don't know what options worse.

"They have read over your medical records, and are willing to replace 60 days in jail.. with a month in a psychiatric facility"

They already know you're crazy.

"Find a way to make this whole case not go public, including my records and my stay in the ward, and I'll do it" I accept that this is my only option and bite the bullet.

I had a week before I had to go to the ward, so I kept a low profile from the public in the meantime.

Two days before I left, Nikolah came back home after spending time with dad. The day after the crash, she had a massive meltdown and couldn't even look at me so she left to grieve in her own way.

Her coming back makes me wish she'd never came back. I barely got time to register who was talking to me before I got slapped in the face.

"You son of a bitch, you took the easy way out! You should be rotting in jail for what you done!" She screams in my face.

I'm backed into a corner, Nikolah still screaming in my face. "You should have been the one who died"

My heart sinks, and at the same time I fill with rage.

"You're too worried about people finding out that you're crazy than to admit that you killed her. What if they found out? I might just tell everyone. Let everyone know that you're fucking insa-"

Black out.

I don't remember exactly what happened in those next 10 seconds, but the next thing I know Thomas has shown up and is screaming at me trying to pull my hands.
