13 | Grass Bondage, I Choose You!

Meowscarada steps out of the home you're completely unfamiliar with. The first thought that crosses your mind is that her and Cinderace could have been kidnapped right from your living room, so naturally when you go up to Meowscarada, the first thing you do is hold her close and check her body for any wounds.

"Are you okay? What happened?" You talk like an overly protective family member. She seems to great pleasure in that. Meowscarada purrs when you feel her body, cuddling close to your chest. "Seriously, Meowscarada. What happened? Where's Cinderace?"

Meowscarada's purring stops. "Of course he's thinking about her too. I can't expect too much, I guess." She shakes her head as if trying to dismiss the topic of Cinderace. But you're not about to let someone vanish because of your partner's jealousy. You stare at the door, considering going inside when suddenly, Cinderace fills the threshold.

"There you are," you say with a smile and a tired sigh, relieved to see they're both fine. "I thought something might have happened. Why did you guys run off like that anyway?"

Cinderace looks back over her shoulder at something you can't see from outside the house. She's not sure whether to trust you, if allowing you into this deep end of her life would be beneficial or detrimental to her family. What if you turn out to be heartless and ignorant? Total scum? The thought bothers her. Gran doesn't need any more stress on her plate.

Faced with Cinderace's silence, you come up with a conclusion of your own. "You live here, don't you?" you ask her, attracting her eyes. "Is your trainer in there?"

Cinderace is unresponsive. Her eyes search your face for any trace of bad intent. She might have enjoyed your company for the week, a whole lot more than she's enjoyed Meowscarada's, but at this point she still can't be sure if you're really as sweet as you make yourself out to be. People change. For better or for worse, they change. In Cinderace's eyes, you are the human standing perfectly between good and bad. The only one she's met that happens to be right smack-dab in the middlegrounds.

"If this is your home"—you look up at the old place, wondering how it manages to look worn and livable at once—"I'll leave you be. Just stay safe, alright?"

Meowscarada starts tugging hard on your hand to get you away from this house and that miserable Cinderace. You let yourself be whisked down the sidewalk, keeping your eyes on the rabbit.

"If the cops bust you at some point, I'll bail you out!" you call out to her. "Promise!"

Meowscarada yanks you harder down the sidewalk.

"Ouch, okay, okay!!" You grumble at the jealousy flaring up in her eyes. "Jeez. No need to scratch up my hands, psycho."

As the two of you make your way back home, Cinderace feels stuck. She watches you get pulled away by Meowscarada and, for some strange reason, she wants to follow you. The longer she looks at you and the relationship you share with your partner, the more she craves that same kind of connection.

She hasn't felt powerful in the presence of a trainer ever since Granny Eve fell into the cold, dead hands of old age. Ever since the woman became bedridden.

Back before that, Cinderace felt she was one with her trainer. In her prime, Eve would command her fated partner down the deepest and darkest of paths — and still the two of them would persevere. Every battle. Every little gap in their way. Nothing could slow them down. Cinderace smiles to herself as these memories come crawling back to her clouded head.

She remembers the days she and Eve would wake up at the exact same time and go sprinting out of the house in hopes the roads away from town would be brimming with challengers.
