It took four hours. Four hours for them to let you back in the inpatient room. The whole time you were outside in the lobby, you couldn't stop yourself from pacing back and forth across the room, not caring for the patients and their Pokémon who kept their eyes on you -- the only one appearing unsettled and uneasy. You didn't look in anyone's direction. Didn't pay them any mind. Your thoughts were set on Cinderace and Meowscarada and everything you had seen prior to rushing them both to this Pokémon Center.
Now you were finally getting to see them after all that time. Time and time again, a nurse would appear from the corridor to reassure you that they were doing all they could to tend to the Pokémons' health. Even still, you couldn't shake the slimy feeling of knowing your partners were on the brink of death. Cinderace, impaled twice through the chest, and Meowscarada, who suffered a concussion from hitting her head against the cave walls.
You step into the room, Nurse Joy standing behind you with her hands clasped nervously together. She walks up beside you, staring at where the two Pokémon lie asleep in separate hospital beds. The first thing you take notice of is the gauze wrapped around Meowscarada's head. The nurses did their best to clean the blood, but you still catch sight of a dried stain peeking out from the back of the bandage wrap. And beyond that lies Cinderace, her body having been turned into a vessel for medicinal fluids of all types. Two IV machines stand side by side next to her bed, her arm comfortably propped up over the side rail to allow easy access for the cords that stem from the machines.
"I thought they'd be awake," you speak softly.
"I apologize," Joy painfully replies, "they're both in a medically induced coma for the time being. It was the best option, as their injuries would prove fatal if they were to be moving around even the slightest bit."
"I still don't understand why," you say. "Why would they go so far to try and kill each other?"
"Ah, is that the story behind this, then?" You look over to Nurse Joy, finding a burning pain for you in her eyes. "I take it this wasn't some ordinary Pokémon battle."
"Not at all. They were out for blood. Honestly, I don't know what I can do with them after today. Up until now, we've been living together. One of them losing their life as a result of... bad blood wasn't the first thought on my mind."
"Mm." Nurse Joy turns toward the door, facing away from the two unconscious Pokémon. "I suggest you keep yourself away from them while they recover. Seeing them in this state won't do you any good, now will it?"
"I-I guess you're right." But despite thinking that, you don't wanna take your eyes away from your partners. You keep on staring, keep on thinking to yourself that when they wake up, you should be the first thing they see. Not some machines or blood or plastic tubes. You should be the one sitting there, waiting for however long it takes until they both come to.
"We'll take good care of them, I promise," Joy reassures you, stepping into the hall and gesturing for you to come with. "They're in good hands, no matter how much bad blood they have between one another."
Comforted by her words, you take one last gander at your Pokémon before stepping out of the room. The door clicks shut and Joy leads you back into the lobby. As per usual, the woman bows before you, granting you a warm parting message, but with everything weighing on your mind, all you can react with is hanging your head as you drag your feet outside of the Pokémon Center. Nurse Joy's natural smile fades into something of genuine concern, watching an unmistakable depression take its hold on you.

It's freezing out, but you don't really care. You wipe away some slush gathered upon a bench and take a seat. You hold your hands together, bouncing your foot absentmindedly on the snow as waves of anxiety come spiraling through you. Your mind can't get off the sight of blood. Spilling from Meowscarada's head. Spilling from the hole in Cinderace's chest. Never did you think you'd see so much blood in one day, let alone see it spill from your own Pokémon. Not even the typical Pokémon battle provides that much blood for the naked eye to bask in. At best, you're looking at a few scratches and bruises when a gym leader's team is good enough to land some hits on your partner.
