"You're a sharp one, aren't you?" you ask Kieran. "I didn't think I'd be having this conversation, but alright, I'll bite. Say she can, in fact, make Tera Shards out of nothing. So what?"

"So what?" Kieran retorts in disbelief. "If she has any ties to Area Zero, that would explain her raw strength—the fact I can't lay a finger on her in battle—as well as her ability to communicate like a human. That would mean she's got something wacko going on inside her body that makes her an absolute powerhouse."

"Ever considered I just trained her really well?"

"I don't think it matters how good of a trainer you are or you think you are. The fact of the matter is that she's strong, unusually strong, and it isn't just a result of having been trained well." Kieran impatiently wipes a hand along his brow and rubs his temples, like he's got a headache throbbing through his skull. "Not to mention, I saw another Meowscarada a few weeks back. I don't think it was yours, it was a shiny, but it definitely gave me the same weird vibes. Makes me think it had something to do with yours, though."

You perk up immediately when he says that. "A shiny?"

"You know, the weirdly off-colored Pokémon, super rare, or something like that. This Meowscarada was taking a hike down the halls, stopped in a classroom and upchucked all over the place."

"What else did it do?"

"Well, that's the crazy part—it could talk too! Like yours! After it vomited, it started saying things about bringing a trainer back to life, but it was totally talking to itself. Oh, and there was someone's name it kept repeating. I think it was—"

"Time for you to go," a voice says, and the two of you face toward Meowscarada, who appears without making so much as a sound, brushes past Kieran and steps right up to you. She throws a second of icy cold glance over her shoulder at the bug-eyed boy before grabbing your hand between both her paws. "I was getting lonely," she says to you. "Come back and finish eating with me."

"Hey, Meowscarada," Kieran says, and—oh no—he's shooting his shot. "Could I ask you some questions, perchance?"

Meowscarada offers him a smile, but it's that smile she gives anyone on her hitlist—mental hitlist, at least—impish, cold, sly. Kieran doesn't react to the look on the Pokémon's face; he stands his ground and settles his own accusatory glare on her.

"The only thing you can do is hop a bridge," she says. "You're pushing your boundaries, little boy. I warned you already about yapping about my voice since your dirty little eavesdropping self snuck up on a private conversation. Keep talking and I'll stitch your lips together for good."

Her eyes flicker with a small pulse of crimson, and she adds, "Better yet, what if I were to make your slimy mouth disappear altogether? Clothes aren't the only available props in my magic tricks."

Kieran looks like he might cry, or maybe yell for his big sister—imagine that—but he does neither. He shoves his hands back into his pockets and turns away from you and Meowscarada, making a subtle 'tch' sound and starting on his way back to the picnic table. This leaves you and your feline partner standing together in patient silence until Meowscarada thinks Kieran is far enough away (too far to eavesdrop again, that's for sure), then she drops your hand and looks you in the eye.

"Pretty rude of you to go talking about me behind my back," she says, and now her smile is gone, "especially with someone you hardly personally know."

"He's just wary of you. You did it to yourself, putting yourself on blast the way you do."

"He's seen things no one should see." She glances over her shoulder. "I couldn't give a rat's ass about how wary he is, he isn't allowed to go snooping around the way he's been."
