84 | In the Pursuit of Life

It all happens so fast. The Meowscarada with a ring of purple flowers around her neck makes a dash directly for you, but she's intercepted by the much more radiant Meowscarada, Theia—the one protecting you. Invidia releases a bloody howl as she summons a flower bomb and pitches it at Theia, full force. It explodes over Theia's arms, swallowing her into a thick black smoke. She tries to weave out of the smoke and wheels around on her heels just in time to see Invidia come surging through, her paws clad in flowing grass energy. She strikes Theia relentlessly in the chest, and a blast of green light bursts from her body.

Theia grasps Invidia's arm, hoisting her up into the air with one hard pull. When the purple Meowscarada goes airborne, her arms and legs swimming through the breeze, a cannon of white light fires from Theia's palm and pierces Invidia's stomach. The feline coughs violently one moment, thrown down into the dirt the next, and Theia jumps back, returning to your side, her eyes fixed on the ravenous, wilted Meowscarada in the field.

"Meowscarada," you stutter, not wanting to get too close to her.

"My name is not Meowscarada, Master," she says in a harsh voice. "My name is Theia."

"R-Right. Theia. You need to be careful."

"I know. Trust me, I know all too well."

Across the field, Invidia gets to her feet, lurching forward once then disappearing in a flash of black. You've seen this before, or at least you think you have—a Meowscarada that can move so fast it looks like she's vanished entirely. Theia hisses, her paws glowing with bright, sharp crystals that look as if they have lungs of their own, bloated with air and throbbing to life.

"Get down!" she shouts, throwing her eyes back at you. You get low to the grass, and just a split second later, Invidia reappears behind you, her arm swiping out in a sharp arc that would have surely decapitated you a moment earlier.

Having missed her target, Invidia lets out a bellowing, frustrated cry, and Theia punches her across the face. Crystals splash out over her flesh and fur, blood squirting from the purple Meowscarada's horribly scarred cheek. She recovers as quickly as she had been hit and vanishes again, disappearing and reappearing behind Theia. She locks her arms around Theia's neck and squeezes, bringing both of them to the ground in a frenzied tussle.

"Something like you doesn't deserve this life," Invidia says through barred teeth as Theia claws helplessly at her arms. "You're a stain on this earth! A walking sin!"

"Let her go!" you shout and scramble forward, throwing yourself. Invidia smiles briefly, tossing Theia to the side and leaning back as you dive into her. A stupid decision—you realize—when Invidia begins to laugh, and a subtle warmth spreads beneath your chest while you're on top of her.

Theia gets to one knee, coughing and gathering her breaths in a collection of desperate gasps. She stares at the two of you and unsteadily climbs to her feet. "You idiot," she croaks, throwing out her arm and with it, a long black vine. It shoots out like a lasso and tethers to your torso, pulling you off of Invidia right as a beam of light bursts from her chest. You go soaring through the air, carried only by this vine and whatever remains of Theia's strength.

A blade of grass surges through the girthy neck of the vine, severing it while you're still attached to it. You start to plummet through the air, screaming for your life because from this height, you'll hit the ground and die. Theia gasps, summoning forth another vine to catch you but Invidia slices this one up faster than the last.

"Master!" Theia shouts, then weaves beneath Invidia's rapid advances. She spins and sweeps Invidia's feet out from underneath her, making the purple feline crash to the ground with a heavy thud. Given a split moment of opportunity, Theia leaps into the air and catches you a few feet from the ground. She lands gracefully, like a cat who lands flawlessly on all fours, and sets you down, panting.
