Chapter 27

"Wow, Ms. Guillermo, you're too early for the second period," asar ng homeroom teacher  namin na siyang teacher sa first period ng umaga.

"Sorry po, ma'am!"

"It's alright. Take your seat."

I scratched the back of my head and gave an awkward smile as I walked toward my seat. I had no idea what time I had even gotten into the classroom. 7:30 AM kaya nagsisimula ang klase at 8:30 AM naman ang second period. And worse, 8:25 AM na ako nakapasok.

"In-absent ka na ng secretary natin!" pabulong na sabi ni Finnley na siyang nasa harapan ng seat ko.

He suddenly blocked his mouth with a hand, as if he was about to whisper something to me. I leaned closer so I could hear what he was going to say.

"Late din pala 'yang seatmate mo, halos magkasunod lang kayong pumasok. Halatang bad mood pa nga no'ng umupo siya, e!"

I nodded along to what he said, sneaking a glance at Yuen, who was now slumped over with his headphones on. Honestly, I couldn't blame him for being in a bad mood. With that grumpy look of his, you would think he carried all the world's bad vibes on his shoulders every single day.

"Ano pa bang bago r'yan? Ang sungit-sungit kaya niya sa lahat, baka pati sinag ng araw kinabu-bwisit-an niya na," natatawa kong bulong.

"Ay, masungit din pala siya sa 'yo? Hindi halata, 'te. Mukha nga kayong mag-jowa lagi na nag-aasaran! Parang ikaw nga lang din ang ka-close niya rito, e! How about us naman?" pahabol niya pa at tumawa.

"E, malala kaya ang galit nito sa 'kin! At anong mukhang mag-jowa? Gaga ka rin, e!"

"Sus, sure ka, ha? Magtaka ka na kung bakit hindi 'yan kumakausap ng iba maliban sa 'yo!"

"Ulol!"

Humarap na siya sa board na parang walang nangyari habang ako naman ay hinila ang collar ng uniform niya para masakal siya.

My mood at the following class hours were undeniably good and light. Buti na lang din ay na-extend nang ilang oras ang deadline ng caricature namin para ma-finalize ko pa ang artwork. Mukha kasing gutay-gutay ang drawing ko, ang pangit pa ng mga kulay.

It was a caricature of myself wearing a teacher's uniform. I had long dreamed of becoming a teacher—I wanted to add another educator to our family. Papa is a Math teacher, and Mama had once dreamed of becoming one too. I wanted to continue that for her.

And in the family I now had with Papa, including Tita Racquel, a Science teacher, I didn't want to be left behind. They supported me in whatever I wanted to do, especially Lolo Kenzy, so I will do anything to achieve it.

I even added a simple doodle as a background, related to the major I wanted to pursue in education. The thing was, I hadn't decided yet if Mathematics, English, Filipino—so I just included them all in the doodle as part of the design.

I was busy setting up the drum inside the music room. Maaga kasi kaming natapos sa last period ng hapon. Mag-isa ko pa lang din rito, medyo napaaga ako ng dating. Excited lang talaga ako!

Umupo na ako sa harapan ng drums. Nabo-bored na kaya ako kaya nag-freestyle lang ako nang kaunti.

Nang hindi pa ako nakuntento ay nagpa-music na ako sa phone ng kanta at saka tumugtog ulit ng drum. I was passionately playing the drum with the song Still Into You by Paramore.

The entire music room was noisy because of it. I was just messing around on the drums, since I had learned this song a long time ago. I bobbed my head along too, eyes fixed on the instrument, grinning from ear to ear. I probably looked silly, but I was having a blast so I didn't mind.
