Bruce sank to his knees once he understood what Clint’s silence meant. Wanda openly cried, while Peter simply stared into nothingness, not wanting her death to be true. He simply couldn’t accept that one of his best friends, his children’s favourite aunt, died so suddenly. Even the team member, who were not as close to Natasha as Peter and Wanda were, seemed to be shocked about the news.
After what felt like ages, during which Peter’s feelings ranged from depression to anger, Steve finally asked the question that was on everybody’s tongue.
“What happened?” he pressed out.
At first, it looked as if Clint, who still was in shock as far as Peter could tell, didn’t hear Steve. Or maybe he just didn’t want to hear him. However, after a few seconds of deafening silence, he finally answered.
“The Stone required a trade. To get it, you have to lose that what you love. A soul for a soul, the red-skinned man, who guarded the Stone, said. And Natasha decided that she was going to be that sacrifice. I tired my best to stop her, to sacrifice myself in her stead, but she has always been a better fighter than me,” he explained with tearful eyes.
Wanda couldn’t stay and listen to Clint’s tale any longer. Without another word, she stormed off. Peter thought about following her, but he knew that she would not want anybody near her right now. Apart from himself and Pietro, Natasha was by far the closest person she had. Truth to be told, she probably was even ahead of Pietro for Peter. She has always been there for him if he needed the smallest of things and he had a hard time wrapping his head around the fact that now that she was gone he wouldn’t have that support anymore.
Peter had a lot of questions himself, but it seemed as if Clint was done answering any questions for now. The archer handed Peter the Stone and walked away without another word. Peter looked down at the orange Stone in his hand, the Stone that brought them this much pain. He felt an unreasonable amount of anger towards it, but Peter forced himself to stay calm. Uncontrolled aggression would do them no good in this situation.
Noticing that they all needed their space right now, Peter left the hangar and dropped the Stone and the Sceptre of in his own lab, before he went upstairs again to look for Wanda. As expected, he found her in their old room, with her head in her pillow. He sat down next to her and put his hand on her back.
“How are you?” Peter asked compassionately.
“How am I supposed to be?” Wanda replied angrily through the pillow. “I am sorry. I didn’t mean to lash out at you. I feel like shit, unsurprisingly.”
“I know,” Peter said, stroking Wanda’s back the whole time. “Can I do anything for you?”
“No. I will manage it. I know that Nat wouldn’t want me to spend the whole day holed up in our room because of her,” she said. Peter simply stayed at her side and continued to stroke her back. After a while, Wanda turned her head to look at Peter. He could see that she most likely has been crying for the most time since they came back.
“What have you decided to do for Nat’s funeral? Because she deserves a huge one,” Wanda asked him.
“Nothing yet. But I believe that we should wait for it. Bring everybody back. And make sure that Nat’s sister can join the funeral once she is back,” Peter explained slowly.
“That sounds like a good idea,” Wanda agreed. “How long will it take to build a glove to fit all the Stones?”
Peter thought about it for a few moments, before he answered her. “Not too long. If we really work hard, we might be able to do it by tomorrow or the day after at the latest,” he said.
