Chapter 18: "
Divided we'll fall "

"Have you found anything?" Max Pawell's voice rang from the corner of the room as he typed away on his computer.

Norm sighed and slumped fully into his seat, distancing himself from the cursed computer screen he'd been staring at for hours. "I'm going to go insane if I have to look for it again only to hit another dead end."

Max followed suit, removing his fingers from the keyboard after hours of fruitless searching for this 'Chimera project' that had been reported to him in the middle of the night. Sleep-deprived, hungry, and with their patience wearing very thin, the two scientists silently came to the conclusion that the girl had probably just decided to fuck with them.

"We've been at this since two in the morning, Max," Norm complained, annoyance evident in his voice as he rose from his chair to dump the last remnants of his cold coffee down the sink. "The kid is crazy, you've seen it. She's probably messing with us for a few laughs."

Max stayed silent, his finger on his chin as he stared at nothing, but continued to think about everything surrounding this topic.

'What use would she have of telling them to look for something that didn't exist?'

'What use was lying to them for fun if she's gonna be locked away from witnessing them going insane to find the proof?'

'What use was coming all the way to their labs for something that didn't exist?'

Max shook his head slowly, disagreeing with Norm's words.

"I don't think she's lying," Max said finally, his voice quiet but resolute. "It just wouldn't make any sense lying about something stupid like this..."

Norm raised an eyebrow in disbelief, skepticism etched into his features. "And what makes you so sure?" he asked, his tone laced with doubt.

Max sighed, running a hand through his hair as he struggled to articulate his thoughts. "I don't know," he admitted. "But the name 'chimera' makes me think that there's no way she just invented that out of nowhere. "

Norm frowned, his expression conflicted as he considered Max's words. He looked around the mess of papers, coffee cups, and the multiple computers in front of him, and bit his bottom lip in thought. He shook his head in denial soon after, not wanting to believe anything he had to say. The girl had somehow managed to crack a tempered window glass by smashing her head on it twice and almost killed herself after attempting that mass murder in the labs.
