Case 3: Happy Face Hides
Everything (The Reunion
Chapter, Part One)

ROSALINDA

I sat quietly, hugging myself, expecting him to leave when I told him to go. But he stayed, gently rubbing my back to comfort me. It had been a long time since I last cried, the last time was when I found out what my mother did to my brother.

“I’ll help you find him.”

I looked at him. “You don’t have to.”

“No,” he said firmly. “You helped me with my blog; now I’ll help you.”

“Why?”

He shrugged. “Because you helped me when I needed it. I just want to return the favor.”

“Thank you, but I don’t really think we’ll be able to find him. It won’t be easy.”

“What, you’re just going to give up instead of doing something?” he raised an eyebrow. “If you think it’s impossible, then why are you ugly crying? What’s the point?”

I frowned. “You just don’t understand!”

He sighed heavily. “Why should I care if it’s impossible or if I don’t understand? If I see you wasting time on a hopeless problem, then forget looking for your brother.”

I made a face, but deep down, he had a point. Instead of looking for a way to find him, I was finding reasons not to.

But if I remember clearly, my mother and Jacob’s new parents were talking on Messenger. When I checked my mother’s Facebook, she hid her friends list; only mutual friends showed. She had no other accounts and barely posted anything, just family gatherings or photos of me.

Hacking my mother’s account might lead me to Jacob’s parents’ profiles. I just hope she hasn’t deleted messages, unfriended them, or erased any history. I know she would never let me use her account, and every time I try to borrow her phone, she yells at me for no reason and immediately takes it away. She’s definitely hiding something—beyond cheating on my dad, which I’ve known for a long time.

“What can I do to help?”

“Do you know anyone who can hack an account?”

He touched his chin. “Yes, I think his name is Ajax.”

Raleigh and I were walking to the Club Building to find Ajax. According to him, Ajax is the Mystery Seekers Club’s Communication Officer and Tech Specialist. I wanted to avoid not just Ajax but also Doyle and Mr. Ivaldez, who kept forcing me to join their club. Even after blocking the president who replaced Doyle, he’d make new accounts to keep pestering me, always trailing me with a smug look. But oddly, he hasn’t bothered me today. Maybe he finally gave up.

I frowned when I saw the club’s name: Literature Club.

What are we even doing here?

He knocked three times.

“What are we doing here?”

“Getting Ajax’s help.”

“Can’t you read?”
