Shinobu POV:
Mitsuri greeted me at the door with a huge smile and a basket of sakura mochi. "SHINOBU-CHANNN I'M HERE!!! I BROUGHT MOCHI!!!"
"Hi, Mitsuri. Thanks for coming." I sighed in relief to see my best friend. "Sorry for the short notice. It's been a stressful month."
"No worries. The mochi should cheer you up." Mitsuri smiled as I led her into the living room. She plonked the basket down onto the coffee table and sat back on the couch. "Aah, the Butterfly Mansion is the best."
"Is Mitsuri-chan here? Hello!" Kanae peeked into the living room. "I'll make some tea for you two, alright?"
"Thanks, Kanae." I smiled at my older sister, and she disappeared into the kitchen.
"So, Shinobu-chan, wassup?" Mitsuri looked totally relaxed and happy. I felt horrible to ruin her mood, but I needed to get it off my back.
"Something.... happened between me and Tomioka last month." I sighed.
Mitsuri dropped the mochi she was about to bite into. "EEEEEEEE! SHINOBU-CHAN! YOU AND TOMIOKA?! EEEEEE THAT IS AMAZING I KNEW IT YOU TWO ARE A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN! I ALWAYS THOUGHT YOU WERE STUPID FOR REJECTING HIM, THE MAN LOVES YOU! EEEEEEEE! But wait, did you say last month? Why are you only telling me now?"
"The.. thing that happened.... it wasn't... good. We're not together." I grimanced.
"Oh." Mitsuri picked up her mochi. "Right. Sorry. Keep going."
"When he woke up.... ah, he told me about.... uh. He said..."
"HE CONFESSED TO YOU!" Mitsuri squealed again.
"Yes. I suppose. Uh.. but the thing is...."
"You rejected him?"
"Yes."
"Oh, shiNOBU. WHY?!"
I shot her a look. "Why do you think?"
"Gosh, I really don't know where to start. Obviously I have zero interest in him (heh) but he's basically the defintion of tall, dark, handsome." Mitsuri raised an eyebrow.
"He's too goofy to be quite tall, dark, handsome." I rolled my eyes, but I could see it.
"Ugh, that just makes it better! Tall, dark, handsome WITH humour! What else could a girl want?" Mitsuri swooned. "I don't understand you, Shinobu-chan."
"Have you forgotten what I did?"
Mitsuri frowned. "Do you mean... the Upper Rank 2?"
"Yes." I buried my face in my hands. "I just couldn't.... I couldn't devote myself like that. I'll always feel horrible about what I did. I never wanted to hurt him more, but I just didn't know if I could let myself be close to him. If I ruin things, if I fail.."
Mitsuri smiled sadly. "You can't fail in love."
"But I can. If I'm too close to him, I'll somehow hurt him again, I know we're not good for each other, the whole reason he was so weak by the time I found him was because I abandoned him after an argument and I ignored his help signals. What the fuck was I thinking?! I don't understand myself either. I just can't... I can't let him risk himself for me again." I whispered.
"Why are you only telling me this now?"
"Because... last month I rejected him. And I just heard, I found out, there were rumours- he's dating Makomo." the words hurt as I said them.
"He's dating who?"
"Makomo. His childhood friend." I lifted my head. "Blue eyes, black hair, pretty. Prettier than me."
"Oh, Shinobu." Mitsuri moved to sit beside me.
Suddenly, a strangled sob escaped from my mouth.
She hugged me tight and I let her.
