Author POV:

Ayumu was a deadly assassin, and Makomo didn't stand a chance.

With one clean slice to the neck, she was dead, and Ayumu was laughing, like he always did, that horrible ringing laugh that made one feel more trapped than actually dying.

Two days later

Giyu POV:

I waited patiently at the rock, glancing at my phone every two seconds. It was already fifteen minutes past three. It was unlike Makomo and Sabito to be late.

The two had promised to meet me here at three, to hangout and just talk it out. I hadn't heard from Shinobu in ages, and my whole life felt dull. Muted. I wasn't quite depressed yet, but close enough. What I wouldn't give to see my best friends again.

Suddenly, Sabito came bursting through the clearing, his eyes wide and frightened. I'd never seen him look so dishevelled and frantic.

"Giyu. Giyu, come. Come NOW!"

"What?" I blinked him, not processing.

"It's Makomo." Sabito gasped, doubling over. "She's... she...."

"Sabito. Calm down. Take deep breathes. And then tell me what happened to Makomo." I put an arm around Sabito as my mind flashed through all the possibilities. Kidnapped? Family death?

"She's... dead."

.

I let go of Sabito, stumbling back. "... What?"

"I went to her house. I made muffins and I was also going to return a coat she left at my house. But... the door was wide open. And when I went in..." Sabito shivered, still clearly horrified by what she'd seen. "I thought the house was empty. I was searching for her, and she... she..."

"What?" My head felt fuzzy. I clutched at my hair, trying desperately to calm the tides of confusion and electrifying fear in my head.

"She was lying on her back, next to the bathtub." Sabito squeezed his eyes shut, looking more frenzied and devastated than ever. "Sprawled on the floor. There was nothing but a towel on her... and.. she was dead."

"What do you mean she's dead?" I shouted. "People don't just die like that! What, she was taking a bath and then suddenly died? Makomo wouldn't... she wouldn't..."

"There was blood in her hair, like she'd hit her head. And... and..." Sabito grimanced, his whole body trembling. "Her neck... it was almost severed. It was almost like someone sliced their katana through her neck. It didn't look like a demon; it was just one clean cut, and there's no... no pulse."

I stared at him, not comprehending, my head still spinning.

"I ran here straight away." Sabito looked up at me with agonised eyes. "I didn't know what to do. But... I shouldn't have left her there. Oh, god, what do we do?"

I shut my eyes, still trying to process what he'd just told me.

Makomo.

My friend. My best friend. The girl I thought I loved.

Her aqua-green eyes, short black hair, short, pale figure. I couldn't imagine her dead. Those sparkling green eyes, always filled with wisdom like a child who'd seen more than she should've, dead and empty? It wasn't possible.

She'd been with me ever since I was a child. She was like a sister to me. And I thought we loved each other.

And Sabito. I looked at my best friend, his auburn hair messy, gray eyes filled with pain. He looked at me with the eyes of someone who'd just lost everything. I knew he had loved Makomo like a sister too. We both had.

What were we without her?

My eyes filled with tears, but I tried desperately not to let them fall. I had to show Sabito strength. Even when all I wanted to do was break apart, I needed to show him he could be strong too.

"Call Urodaki. Let's go."

"Go where? For what?" Sabito looked heartbroken, torn apart.

I looked at him with cool, blank eyes to hide my pain. "We're going to avenge her."
