Author POV:

Being a Hashira was hard work, and Sabito wasn't up for it in the end. So I guess that's how Giyu ended up at a Hashira meeting that he wasn't particulary paying attention too, courtsey of a particular purple-clothed butterfly by his side. 

Kocho Shinobu had long standing been the Hashira's doctor and she always reigned in flexibility and speed, much like her older sister, Kanae, who had just recently 'retired'. Shinobu had took on her job and she was doing it well. 

Perhaps her pretty face, deep-purple eyes and silky hair was what led to her personality being nothing short of aggresive. She was always on her guard around any male and didn't hesitate to let someone know she hated them. Despite her lovely appearance, Shinobu wasn't a girl to be reckoned with. 

But that didn't deter Giyu Tomioka, water pillar and one of the only pillars with a sense of humour. 

He used to be very shy and reserved when he first became a pillar. Giyu's position had meant to be Sabito's, his best friend's, but he'd changed his mind last second and instead Giyu rose to the Hashira position. 

Giyu's shyness quickly melted away before long, thought, after he'd became friends with Rengoku, the fire pillar, and Muichiro. After finding his people Giyu revealed his outgoing personality and horrible dad jokes. He was easily distracted (but not so much as Muichiro, thank god) but was one of the best pillars due to his ability to concentrate when he really wanted to. 

So you must have gathered from the above now that Giyu and Shinobu are polar oppisotes. The pretty-but-aggresive butterfly and the unpopular-but-funny water pillar. None would expect a romance to bloom between them. 

Well, that's not implying they will share a romance in the future. Truth be told, it actually appears quite unlikely to many, seeming as Giyu is unwisely, undoudtedly, desperate. 

Desperate as in everyone knew Giyu had a huge crush on Shinobu; it was so obvious even Muichiro could tell. Desperate as in Shinobu really, really hated him because he annoyed her. Desperate as in Giyu couldn't stop trying, talking to Shinobu everyday or making some smart remark. 

At first everyone (particulary Sanemi, who hated Giyu because Kanae disliked him for pursueing her sister, and everyone knew Sanemi felt whatever Kanae felt purely because he wanted to) thought Giyu was being a total cringe-fest in front of Shinobu. But time quickly melted that belief as Giyu and Shinobu's relationship shifted into something somewhat worthy of a maybe-friend friendship. 

Giyu treated Shinobu in a crush and best friend sort of way, while Shinobu always acted annoyed but ended up talking with him anyways. What the insect pillar didn't know was that how much her words meant to Giyu, who had never had a crush on anyone but her. 

Years of building their relationship, and Giyu had never given up. 

He believes she is worth it.
