Author POV:
That evening, after Mitsuri had left, Shinobu closed the door behind her as she walked into her office.
Mitsuri had been consoling, but also angry with her, for good reasons. It was clear she had been stubborn and for her pride, had not accepted Giyuu. And now like the horrible person she was, she was now getting jealous of Makomo and feeling furious with herself for being an idiot.
So. Wow.
As Shinobu slid to the floor, she pressed her face into her hands. If she could, she would start sobbing again, but her eyes were so raw and red from crying all day that she had no more tears left.
In a sudden spur-of-a-moment desicion, Shinobu grabbed her casual kimono and purse, tugging the dress on and running a brush through her tangled hair. Not bothering with makeup, she slid quietly out the door before Kanae could spot her.
It was late at night. As she walked quickly, angrily, towards the local pub, she felt time slipping out of her hands. She didn't care about her health anymore. Not right now. Not when there was a tangled knot of horrible emotions in her chest, so tight that she felt like she couldn't breathe, and suddenly she had wished to just taste that smooth golden liquid and drown herself in it.
The homeless men on the streets, drunk and drowsy, were pointing and laughing at her as she walked swiftly down the dark street, shouting things at her that were vile but she couldn't hear them, not when her head was pounding already without any alchohol.
Shinobu crossed the street, then speed-walked straight into the local pub. There was a good amount of drunk, late-night customers in the small pub, but Shinobu managed to find an empty corner at the counter.
"What can I get you today, miss?" the bartender asked, with a flick down and up her body.
"Just... anything." Shinobu pressed her hands to her head. Something in her heart tugged everytime she thought of Giyuu and Makomo together. "The strongest you can make it." It almost felt like she was asking for coffee. But coffee wasn't enough to drown out the mess in her chest right now.
"Sure, miss. One or two?"
"Two. Actually, make it three." Usually ordering lots of drinks at once implied she wanted company, especially as a woman, but Shinobu didn't care anymore. She just wanted anything to make the pain in her heart stop.
She dropped some cash on the table. The bartender took it eagerly and went to make her the drinks. Within half a minute he plonked the scrappy drinks in front of her.
"Thanks, miss."
Shinobu downed one glass and laughed maniacly. "Thank you." The alchohol was going straight to her head, and as a lightweight everything immediantly became blurry, unfocused, but in return her feelings and messy thoughts were dulled, like someone had poured water over a fire.
She grabbed another glass and tipped her head back, finishing it all in one mouthful. She spluttered, almost choking on the cool liquid, but the feeling that came afterwards was all worth it. It was like taking drugs; the dampended emotions, and now after another shot the emotions were gone completely.
Now she couldn't even focus the thought of Makomo and Giyuu in her head.
"Hello there." Suddenly, someone slid into the seat beside her. "I'm Ayumu. And you are?"
"Eh.... Shinobu Kocho." Shinobu murmured drowsily. She pushed her third glass towards him, then called out to the bartender for another round.
"What's up? A pretty girl like you shouldn't be alone." Ayumu lifte her chin with his finger, grinning at the swimmy look in her eyes. In his eyes she was a drunk beautiful woman. The perfect target.
"I rejected the love of my life."
"Did you?"
