Author POV:
Everything was a mess for the next few days.
The Butterfly Mansion was cramped, full of sick villagers, and each one was more difficult than the next. They pushed aside doctors, medicine, one old woman even refused to lie down on the bed. There were constant behavioural issues, even worse than Zenitsu, and tons of exasperated nurses came to Kanae everyday to report verbal assault or even physical violence.
Shinobu was confused. She'd tried to get therapists and counsellors in to speak to these villagers, but there didn't seem to be any progress in their mental states.
Even worse, she'd barely had time to sleep or eat, let alone check up on Giyu. Kanae assured her he was fine, conscious and recovering, but Shinobu never stopped worrying.
One day, two weeks into treating the villagers, Kanae walked in on Shinobu at 4 am. She had been sitting at her desk, studying the formula for medicine that could help the patients.
"Shinobu?" Kanae sighed. "You should go get some sleep. We have another busy day tomorrow. Mr Ojichua still hasn't stopped coughing, and the younger ones are getting restless..."
"Kanae." There was something like wonder and fear in her voice as Shinobu gasped. "I think I figured it out."
"What?"
"The formula." Shinobu held up a small vial filled with pastel pink liquid.
The next day
Kanae beamed at her sister. The pair had stayed up the entire night, making sure the formula was foolproof before they began diagnosing the patients and writing out quantities.
"Hey, Shinobu. You've done the hard part. Just leave the rest to me." Kanae said to Shinobu, smiling. "I can handle everything from here. We have lots of helpers, now all we need to do is give out the medicine and monitor side-effects. I bet some of the younger adults will make a fast recovery really soon. You just try to get some rest, okay? Check up on Tomioka. I know you want to."
Shinobu sighed. "Thanks, Kanae." Something in her stomach twisted. What if Giyu wasn't well? Or if he didn't get the medicine soon enough? What if he hadn't forgiven her? It was her fault he'd been so upset that he'd made himself go on holiday without telling anyone. He'd probably been trying to escape the horrible reality Shinobu had created. In that moment, she hated herself.
"Don't worry about him." Kanae smiled kindly. "I'm sure everything will be okay."
"I really hope so."
