Shinobu POV:

The sound of fighting.

I could hear it in the distance.

My ears perked up. I'd been sitting here in the small clearing on this very rock for almost an hour now, watching the koi fish in the shallow lake wrestle with each other, and yet then I hadn't heard a sound.

Perhaps he had only just located his so called 'Upper Rank 2'.

I was so furious with him. Every cell in my body screamed 'NO' at his actions, at his words. I hate him. Or at least, I should hate him.

Despite his despicable words, his challenging blue eyes, his shouting at me, his pursueing of me, his stubborness, his annoyingness- something about him pulled me in. Like we were both magnets that couldn't help speaking to each other.

The sounds of battle began dimming and I wondered numbly if the duel was almost over. By now the demon should've already been dead.

Right?

I sighed, pushing off the rock as I dipped my feet in the crystal-clear water. The small, glittering koi fish scattered at my presence as I stepped over the shallow lake and onto ground, all the while tightening the clip in my hair.

That was enough moping. Time to find him and go back, soon as possible.

At least seeing a demon corpse would make me feel a bit better.

Author POV:

She didn't get to see a demon corpse. In fact, she very nearly saw Giyu's corpse as she rushed to the clearing where the two fought furiously.

She arrived just in time to see Douma strike a terrifying slash at Giyu's battered torso, his face manically grinning, and Shinobu suddenly felt as if the world was going in slow-motion as Giyu's limp body fell back and landed on the floor with a thump, like a doll.

Shinobu shrieked and dashed to him, flabbergasted to see he was losing the battle with the demon. Even worse, she saw with absoulute clarity that she saw the Douma's eye that it was the Upper Rank 2. He'd been right. And she'd so, so stupidly thought he was just lying, exaggerating

Douma spotted the young girl and giggled. It was a high-pitched giggle that only a madman could pull off- or maybe a bloodthirsty demon who had just spotted his next female prey.

Shinobu took no notice of him, and Douma didn't move as she screamed at Giyu, telling him to wake up, grabbing his haori and yanking him up.

She immediantly let go of his haori when she realised it was soaked with blood.

Giyu POV:

Everything spun.

I could see stars. The world was fuzzy, unfocused, but I could just make out a figure above me. Something like white noise filled my ears. They were shouting. Shouting what?

Slowly my world came back into focus. A familair face became clear. ".....Shinobu?" My voice felt hoarse and just as I tried to sit up, I slumped back down. The flinch of pain on my chest was too much.

"TOMIOKA GIYU, HOW DARE YOU GET HURT, HOW DARE YOU HAVE BEEN TELLING THE TRUTH, HOW DARE YOU BE RIGHT, HOW DARE YOU-" Shinobu screamed at me as she ripped off my haori and undid the button of my uniform top.

It must have looked worse than I thought, because she abruptly stopped yelling and her already wet eyes filled with more tears, her hands cupping her mouth. "Oh, my god, oh."

I looked down at my chest. There was a huge red slash. Gently, Shinobu brushed the wound and I winced. "Hmm. That hurts more than I thought it would."

"Shut up!" she blinked back her tears and fumbled around in her haori for her medical kit. "Shut the hell up, how dare you let yourself get hurt like this, you fricking idiot!!"

I smiled hazily as she fumbled around, uncorking a bottle of medicine. "It's okay."

"It's not okay!" Shinobu unexpectedly burst into tears as the cork on the bottle remained tightly shut. "Oh, open, you fricking thing! OPEN!"

Suddenly, the demon- sorry, Douma, - appeared behind her, his horrible grin in place as he touched her shoulder. "Why, hello, dear."

Shinobu let out a girlish shriek and she lept to her feet, the bottle of medicine forgotten as she unsheathed her katana. "Get away from me, demon."

"Shinobu." I reached up for her, but she was too far away. Everything was spinning again and my chest hurt like hell. "Shinobu, be careful."

"Giyu, no. Stay with me. Stay-"

That was all I heard as she dropped to her knees beside me and everything went black.
